I used to use a side planer many many years ago (1980s) with plug/crankbait on the Puy fishing for winter steelhead behind the skating rink. Dunno if they even allow plugs or side planers any more but it used to work well if you got an area dialed in and got the setup running well.
Sorry all my info is sooooo dated.

Hoping to be able to get out a little this year after getting a little more wiggle room from last year landing pinks off the pier and a few silvers in the river.
Of course with all the people now, I can't imagine getting away with a side planer even if you can use them since it keeps your line suspended over the water and therefore takes up a lot of drift space. Any kind of crowd and it would likely be a no go. But I can remember the nice area behind the rink having maybe 2 or 3 people on the whole stretch fishing Steel in January... Good old days LOL.
