My very first casting reel was right hand wind, it was ok, but I can't see wasting the time to change the rod to the other hand between casting and winding. I've had fish strike in that short of time, might have lost some if I would have had to wait a little to set the hook.
So what is called a left handed reel is for right handed people? I have Revos SL, L for left, I am right handed and cast with my right and have always cranked the reel with my left......
Ya, that's a little crazy. I guess a left hand reel is cranked with the right hand, but that's not the way I see it. Right hand reel = cranked with the right hand. Left handed = cranked with the left hand. To me the hand that cranks the handle is what hand the reel is, not the hand/arm that makes the cast. Makes much more common sense.

Wow, such a great topic!
I may be a fishing snob, this I admit. But seriously, if your buddy is doing the upside down spinning reel thing, please just pull him aside, and help a Brutha out! Nobody wants to look the fool.
We've all got our deficiencies.
I am playing Fantasy Football in a work league. I have never watched a game in my life. I don't know who coaches the aseahawkes. Sometimes I ask things you wouldn't believe.
We're all different.
But more importanly, if I was holding my rifle upside down, I would want to know. [drool]

They have to reel towards themselves. It may be more comfortable for them. I doubt it. I have had several students who started out that way. Sometimes the like to hold the rod way down at the base of it, rather than at the reel, and I remind them to "choke up" on the rod. Once a fish rips the rod out of their hand, the lesson is usually learned.

It's pretty goofy to see the rel on top. I don't understand how that would seem like a good idea. The reel wants to twist to the bottom, you're reeling towards yourself. How do you play a fish like that? Weird.

When I was a kid and got my first pole for Christmas, I swiched the handle to the right side though Im right handed. I didnt know any better. Luckly my father was there to teach me.
I think the people we see from time to time, usually on the odd years, just want to catch a fish. And are brave for trying something foreign. But I laugh at them [razz]

Oh he has been told, and he is aware of the correct way. However he is set in his ways and not about to change. Looks awkward as hell. I guess it would be like you or I starting to fish like that after years of fishing the way we fish.....would just be awkward and uncomfortable. Doing it the right way would feel like that to him.

I cast with my right and then reel with my right. However by the time my gear hits the water my rod is back in my left hand. Some would say just cast with my left, but just don't have the accuracy and it just does not feel right. I have always thought it strange that people when fishing salt gear or bait caster will reel with right but then for some reason when using spinning gear they start cranking with the left hand  No matter what kind of set up I use I always crank with the right and have pole in the left.....but cast with my right.

I cast right and reel left handed. I think that feels natural because I'm right handed? I do this with both my bait caster and spinning reel.

I'm right handed. I cast right handed and do the switch-er-roo with no issues. I can work left hand reels, just don't want to.

i have plenty of shimano, pflueger and penn spinners, id go with the shimano sahara or above, for any big fish, i have a penn battle 400 and i loved it, but with my other 2 penns they just wear out and get a little loud and they lay line on the reel unevenly, same thing with the plueger arbor and purist, the pflueger president rocks though even if its cheaper, but the shimano sahara, symetre, saros and stradic are all fine reels around or under $150... maybe one day you'll get a shimano sustain, that my friend, is an angel of a reel,

I would add to this to not settle for a sahara anymore, this year's model got rid of the machined handle and it now comes with a cheap cast aluminum one. Spend the extra 20 and get a symetre.
