Spawned Salmon..

I would like to take a stance on a fellow fisherman/women who takes home a spawning/spawned fish. I find it very ignorant to those who would bash the idea. I am Filipino, and eating a fish whether it be spawning or spawned is no comparison to Balut. or pigs blood. you get the point. I love watching the Food Network or Man VS Wild or Survivorman..are we not humans?? We eat. nuff said. I want to hear from those who are bashing my fellow friend...

This was a hot topic in a different forum I moderate. For example in WA it is legal to keep spawning kokanee, although as one warden mentioned he didn't know if anyone would keep a second after eating the first. The meat is mush, and if the fish haven't spawned yet it reduces the fry hatch for the next year. Other states such as UT and CA do have laws preventing keeping spawning phase fish based on the impact it has on hatch numbers. In the end in WA it's a matter of personal ethics and conservation.

Different strokes for different folks. Eating duck embryo's (balut) is ok for those that grew up with it. Every culture and ethnic group has their unique foods that those raised in other cultures find distasteful and disgusting. That said, eating spawning and post spawn salmonids and their organs can be hazardous to anyones health. Since these fish basically are dying while they are procreating there are a lot of not so friendly bacteria at work. There is a reason that sushi restaurants only use salt water caught salmon. Salmon that have returned to the rivers pick up all kinds of nasties that there immune systems cannot resist. Yes you can bake, boil, steam, fry, bbq, smoke, cover with spices, garlic, onion, and sauces. It may be palatable to someone but it still can lead to screwing up the health record.

Thank you all for your response. Last week I caught one of those things and promptly let it go. I was just happy that I caught something in a river this year. It's face was rotting. My skin is crawling now reading about how dangerous these things can be.. Thank you all for putting the sugar on this subject!

I think there might be some confusion, the fish my buddy is keeping are ones that took his bait/presentation..he isn't taking home some random dead fish lying on the shore. These fish were caught. They had discoloration, but they took his presentation..

Even by smoking? They won't have flavor? I find the smoked flavor to be very tasteful.

dude, you don't want to keep those fish. its nasty and f***ed up. i really don't have much to say besides the fact that i've snagged those dead/dying fish on the bottom and i don't even release them. i just cut my line. i refuse to even touch those nasty rotting fish with sores. and trust me, i've seen plenty of rotting nasty chums and pinks with maggots crawling all over them on the banks of alaskan rivers and it makes me never want to eat salmon again. just live by this one rule.....If it ain't chrome, don't take it home!!!
