Thumbs up - WDFW
Was out fishing area 9 this morning and saw a WDFW research boat putting around. Looks like it was out picking up stray/lost/leftover crab pots from the season, as I saw a bunch of pots and crab buoys on the deck of the boat.
Just wanted to say thank you to the WDFW for doing this. Ive seen a handful of pots still out there now that the season is closed. Was going to call them in and report them but it looks like they're getting picked up and WDFW is taking care of getting these ghost pots out of the water!!

I was wondering about all of those pots at Possession that disappear during a decent flood tide. Must have been a lot of people that thought someone stole their pots during the season. During a weekday, slackish flow, tons of floats... Current picks up, then very few floats showing.
I wonder if Matt was in on the round up............?

How about they offer them up for a quick low ball sale? Good for us, and funds back to the WDFW. Yes A-9, that is a positive thing.

What I read a few months back, subject to my failing memory, that's why ph numbers are required on float....... LOL yeah right! LOLThe Quadfather wrote:How about they offer them up for a quick low ball sale? Good for us, and funds back to the WDFW. Yes A-9, that is a positive thing.

Would be interesting to see what they do with them. Probably contact the owner if there is name/address/phone info on buoy. The Quadfather wrote:How about they offer them up for a quick low ball sale? Good for us, and funds back to the WDFW. Yes A-9, that is a positive thing.
I'm sure a lot of folks are tempted to take these stray pots and keep em, but it's best to report any of this gear to the WDFW.
Anyways, nice to see them rounding up these pots so they don't become derelict gear. Like Mark said, some of the summer tides during a max ebb/flood can easily sweep pots away. I've seen a few out in 150' + that are just dragging out to sea. I had a run in with a derelict pot on my downrigger while trolling this summer, somehow got the downrigger to pull up the pot and now I'm stuck trying to either repair an old pot that isn't in toobad of shape or take it to the dump.

Memory is a funny thing, it's the name and address that is required, phone number is optional. The below statement is written in the regs section for crab gear, bottom of pg 139.
"LOST GEAR:
Do not attempt to salvage lost shellfish gear in Hood Canal without first getting a permit from the WDFW Enforcement Program - (360) 902-2936. To report lost shellfish gear, call WDFW at 1-855-542-3935. If we can recover your gear and it is properly identified, we will attempt to return it."
