Are you a boatWAD!!!

Post by panfisher » Mon Sep 12, 2011 3:48 am

So!!! one of the few hours that I've had this year to fish, I get in to some hot crappie action and a couple of boatWADS decided that I was getting more than my share of fun. As you can see, the two BoatWADS park'd right were I was still fish'n. I could have touch'd them with my 12 1/2ft pole. never fails that when a person is having action fishing from shore, BoatWADS that have the rest of the lake to fish have to horn in. today I said (thank you). in the past I would not have been so nice. Depending on the next BoatWADS I may not be!!!!!

Flip side of that coin I hate dudes on shore harassing me or disrespecting my space while I'm out in my boat!! Today on the river we were TROLLING through an area and a couple jackholes pulled up on shoe to plunk, as we were trolling by they decided to go ahead and cast 4 oz of lead out into the river OVER both of our lines.... if they waited 30 seconds we would have been past them. I called the guy out and didn't even get an apology had to pull our gear and move out of the area even though we were there HOURS before they decided to crawl out of bed....:-({|=

Bottom line, this conflict exists and will never truly be resolved. No reason to lose sleep over it.

Flip side of the flip side is when I'm minding my own business and fishing with twenty other guys at Tom Eddy and the boat cruises through knowing that the shore is lined with bankies on OUR side, sucking up our lines and running down a bobber and knocking my fish off. And the Jerks who take their jetskis and vroom around our little boat not 20 feet away nearly swamping us when there are miles and miles of water for them to be messing with that we're not on. Or the dude that casts a buzz bomb across your line tangling up with you every other cast and then calls you a jerk when you get tired of untangling his braid from your 8 pound mono and cut his gear off. Yea.

I have learned from experience that if there is one constant it is that people are selfish and their behavior will usually show it. When you take away the incentive for people to be polite and cordial they will trod all over people. Nice... I like that one.:-"
I guess that I am lucky, I have not had any boatwads move in on me, and visa versa on the bankies. Sure do see some ugly behaviour though. all the more reason I prefer to fish and boat in places where I see few people. Today I had to take my son kayaking on Lake Union of all places to try out a couple yaks before purchasing. OM blankin' G... An 85 degree day on Lake Union brought every idiot, truey not a place to be in a kayak.

When the bankies fish in the only navigable channel, the bobber and plunking gear is going to get run over. It just is what it is. Sorry.

PS it's not just the bankies, plenty of guides and other boaters think it's their job to block the only channel through a given area.

Yes but common courtesy dictates that if there is a fish on anywhere, whether from boat or by shore, you don't run it over and knock it off. People don't have to be jerks, but they are. Because they can be.

Sorry but it's not courtesy to block the navigable channel. If you fish in a shipping lane, you get run over. When it comes to a boat worth many tens of thousands of dollars (or more), I'll bet any owner/captain is going to run where it's safe.

Sorry but safety trumps the favorite hole everytime.

There are good and bad sides to everything. We all tend to get anxious when we see fish being caught . Theres like too many fisherpeople anymore. Its just gonna get worse as time goes on. Boatwads on the river do exist. I fish the Snoqualmie down by Neal road and at leat twice a season some jerk in a sled runs over my line doing 40 mph and cuts my line or picks it up. If they pick up the line I open my bale hoping the nut gets 200 yards of 20lb test mono all wrapped on his propellor shaft. What comes around goes around. Karma!!!!For the most part if I wave at a boater that Im fishing a hole they sometimes move out of harms way.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I am guilty of running over bank gear a time or two on the river. I make a conscious effort to stay clear of other boats and bankies both and give them their space when running. I think running WOT is the BEST course of action though, get in and out quick and let people get back to fishing, none of this putt putt business or half throttle business; going slow blocks people off for much longer, and half throttle throws a wake so big you could bust out a surfboard. For the most part, jet boats on plane put of barely any wake, just blow through and get it over with. Usually when I have conflicts with the shore anglers when running my boat it is for 2 reasons, 1) I didn't see you there, and I am sorry. Raise your rod tip up high so I can see your line, or wave your hand so I know you're there!! Standing still with camo waders and a camo hat in the bushes doesn't help me look out for your gear. #2 occurs when I have no where to go. Boats moving through the slot, or anchored in the slot as Bodo has pointed out often bottle neck the flow of traffic and unfortunately it is often closer to shore than I would normally like to be running. Now days with so many people on the river, and fishing ever increasing in popularity Nate is right, there is just a lack of respect and common courtesy for one another.

It makes me mad too years like this when EVERYONE and their cousin are out fishing for pinks making bad and unsafe decisions left and right then getting mad at ME the guy who is on the river 365 days a year EVERY year because they think that I did something wrong. If I don't see you out there in December in the snow, don't complain about my river etiquette! lol.

Really wasn't expecting this to be a two guys in kayaks when I clicked, more drunks in ski boats (nothing wrong with ski boats, but to me it implies fishing being someone's second priority and them not knowing what they're doing). I don't know why you'd rush over to where somebody is fishing from shore when the best part of having a boat is being able to go wherever you want.

In your particulare case, those guys in the kayaks are boatwads. They should of just made a mental note and come back a different time. Thats what I do when I am out on my float tube. Or they should of asked if they could fish with you.

Pink season does bring out tension between boaters and bankies. I like to fish at Browns Point. Everyone is casting buzz bombs out far enough to hit boats that are too close. People on the beach scream at the boats to go out further and boaters scream back because their boat got hit with a buzz bomb.

Wasn't there a thread similar like this in the bass forum. About other boats invading your spot that your working and catching bass. People just need to use common sense and be curteous.

With any luck they will have spent too much time without sunblock on their exposed skin and have a serious burn to deal with come morning.

This is the main reason why I do very little fishing in the rivers and lakes on west side. Too many people.

I hear about things like this and I think back to a day I was fly fishing the N. Fork of the Blackfoot River in Montana. I was up near the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. No one for miles, just beautiful native cutthroats, elk, deer, grizzly bears and me. The thing about grizzlies, they leave you along most of the time if you leave them alone.....not so with humans.

To be fair, I do try to be accomodating and go around gear. Truth be told it's normally it's other boatwads ususally making the trouble. As an example there's a slot downstream from 522. Its the only way to get by the island at the RV park. When the fishing is busy, there is always some wad sitting anchored 30 feet from the top of the chute, rods jutting out at every angle cast as far as possible, right in the middle of the channel. It effectivly blocks all traffic up and down. My other favorite spot is at the confluence. The guides will anchor just out of the current from the Sky totally blocking off the Snoq. with a good 6 boats or so. Not to mention the Snoq. is closed and they are all breaking the regs. They b!tch when you go slow and they really b!tch when you go fast. =)

I totally understand going to the river and picking your best spot on the river and just wanting everyone to stay away. Since we're talking about a crowded river here, maybe adding some more criteria to the perfect site choice would be appropriate or choosing a river system a little farther away from the populace with less trafic. I've fallen victim to it too and trust me I'm really good at being my own worst enemy.

In the case of the busy river system (you know the one). Lets choose a parrallel scenario and take fishing and the river out of it, look at something like this;
Say I was bow hunting for deer. Went out and scouted the perfect spot, a great pinch spot were all the deer had to run right by you. Set up my blind in the dark and hunker down to wait. All of a sudden the cars start to wiz by. You've set up your blind right next to deer crossing sign on the highway. You get totally p!$$ed at the guys driving the cars because you've picked your perfect spot and they're driving right through it. So is it the jerks driving on the highway or the choice spot for the blind? Food for thought.

PS: The guys with the Kayaks are total NOBS as is quite often the case. I know we have some Yakers on here and I'm sure you don't operate that way.
