Chapter 57 Meetings

I realize that I haven't attended a club meeting for quite a while. I'll try to make it soon, but not this month, as I'm going to Wisconsin this week to attend a school reunion.

Tapps Lake Survey Discussed At 3/22/14 IFPAG Meeting

WDFW's Inland Fisheries Policy Advisory Group (IFPAG) met in Olympia today, and one of the agenda items was a discussion of the Tapps lake survey, which WDFW conducted on Oct. 21 - 23, 2014. Kevin Bye has already posted a thread about this, quoting a newspaper story from January about the survey res...

Outcome of Public Meeting on Lake Tapps

I felt it was a positive meeting with good vibes between the lake residents and anglers. The anglers in the audience acquitted themselves admirably. The lake residents were receptive to learning about tiger muskies. Sen. Roach wants an outcome that will satisfy everyone. The WDFW people did a great ...

Re: Sen. Roach: Are Tigers Good or Bad on Lake Tapps?

He got the senator involved hoping to create political pressure on WDFW to remove the tiger muskies from the lake. It's very important for anglers to show up at this meeting to provide political counterweight. Even if the senator is sympathetic to us (I don't know if she is), she will need public su...

Re: Sen. Roach: Are Tigers Good or Bad on Lake Tapps?

From reading Mr. Castile's letter, it's pretty clear he's blaming tiger muskies for what he perceives to be a disappearance of small fish (bass, crappie, etc.) and ospreys from Lake Tapps, and wants the tigers evicted from Tapps. Senator Roach, by calling the meeting, is responding to a constituent ...

Re: Merwin Poaching Update

They're probably eating them. Being foreigners, they belong to a tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone else, and Bruce Bolding guessed they're probably distributing the fish to families at their churches. That seems logical to me. They're working too hard at this to just be doing it for...

Merwin Poaching Update

I received a call this morning from my friend Mike at Merwin with an update on this situation. The group we've been concerned about was observed putting in at a launch area, law enforcement was alerted, and the Sheriff's Marine Patrol with a WDFW game warden aboard intercepted them and found spearin...

IFPAG Meeting, Aug. 8, 2013

WDFW's Inland Fish Policy Advisory Group (IFPAG)'s meeting near Cle Elum today was well attended by IFPAG members and department staff. F&W Commissioner Jay Kehne of Omak, a former USDA soil scientist who now works for Conservation Northwest, also attended. The main item of interest to Esox anglers ...

Re: Poaching and Merwin

Nate, fyi, Pete Maina's uncle owns property at Campers Hideaway on Lake Merwin and fishes there frequently. The rest of you -- yes, something is being done, but don't expect to read about it on the internet, because poachers can read, too. In the meantime, not mentioning any names but you know who y...

IFPAG Update

Bruce Bolding called me today to tell me the WDFW director has reappointed me to IFPAG, so I will be the muskie community's representative on this body for two more years. It is an honor and privilege to represent you folks, and please feel free to let me know your thoughts and concerns about WDFW's...

Re: 10/6 Merwin Tournament Results

I didn't register for the tournament but I went out at about 2:20 p.m., tossed a few casts at timber in the channel near the bridge, then pounded downlake against the waves to the rocky point around the corner from Speelyai Bay and caught a 40-incher on my first cast there. As I was alone in my boat...

Merwin Poaching Update

I don't want to say anything here, because for all we know, the poachers could be reading this forum. I asked Jani to arrange a time slot on this Thursday's Chapter 57 meeting agenda to discuss this issue. It would be helpful if someone from Cascade Musky Associaton could attend that meeting to take...

Re: Merwin Access Issues

Mike and I have been launching at Cresap, which closes Sept. 30. I don't know if Speelyai has reopened. We didn't see any vehicles in the Speelyai parking lot yesterday when we passed it in the boat. I'm in Seattle today, going back to Merwin tomorrow. I caught a 42-inch, 20 pounder yesterday. Nice ...

Merwin Access Issues

I just talked by phone with my friend Mike who lives near Lake Merwin, and he says Speelyai is closed because crews are removing trees along the access road to the boat launch. There's another boat launch at the Cresap campground, but he says it's restricted to use by campers, and will close for the...
