Salmon fishing to close Oct. 26
in Grays Harbor and its tributaries

OLYMPIA – Salmon fishing in Grays Harbor and its tributaries will close Monday, Oct. 26, to help protect wild coho salmon, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.

The early closures include sport and commercial salmon fisheries within Grays Harbor and recreational salmon fishing in all tributaries of the harbor. Recreational salmon fishing was scheduled to run through Jan. 31 in most of the affected fisheries.

Catch data suggests the return of coho is significantly lower than the pre-season forecast, said Steve Thiesfeld, regional fish program manager for WDFW.

“With such a low return, we need to take this step now to help us reach spawning goals and other conservation objectives,” Thiesfeld said.

The major rivers – and their tributaries – that will close include the Humptulips, Hoquiam, Chehalis, Wishkah, Wynoochee, Satsop, Black, Skookumchuck, Johns, Elk and Newaukum rivers and Van Winkle Creek. Thiesfeld noted that the department will continue to monitor returning coho and could re-open fisheries if the run size improves.

You obviously didn't read the fine print!

I'm sitting at Olsens in Seiku. We've been doing very good on Coho. Today as we were out trolling we counted 5 commercial boats out front netting the hell out of the fish all day until it got to dark to see. Wonder why there are no fish in the rivers?

I can understand a commercial fisherman needing to make money to earn a living. I wonder who monitors commercial netting? I wonder if it is self regulated or virtually so.

I can also see that grocery stores and restaurants need fresh fish. It adds up to a lot of jobs and income for the state. I guess this is a tricky issue. It would need to be watched by the wdfw and I wonder if they have the manpower. Lots of state agencies are in a budget crunch.

They Shouldn't allow netting until the hatcheries get their quotas.
