Cashmere, WA fishing

Post by wisconsinite » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:05 am

I am looking for some help here, I am attending a 5 day search and rescue seminar May 16, 08 in Cashmere, WA. My husband would like to come but needs something to do. He is big into fishing, (we fish in WI on lakes, and also on the Great lakes for lake trout and salmon) and also into hunting. I would like any help on areas he could fish around there, and what to fish for at this time of year. (Or anything else that would be a fun guy thing) We will be flying in, so he can't bring alot of tackle. I would imagine one day he could rent a charter on Chelan, but cost wise he can't do this everyday.
Any advice anyone could offer would be great. IE: RIver fishing on his own?? or something like that.
Thanks,
Terri

he is actually hitting the area at a good time of year. there is the year round Fish Lake (outside of leavenworth) for trout and perch. he has the wenatchee and columbia river systems within 5-10 minutes of cashmere (besides flowing right thru cashmere). there are a ton of different species fisheries around the wenatchee area (walleye, and, the silver fish runs on the columbia, shad, trout lakes (alpine lakes, etc). my favorite is a fishery that opens up on june 1st, so, looks like you will not make it to that date, though. the icicle river for trout. the wenatchee river also has the silver fish runs, all the way up to the icicle. it is an exciting area to move to, some world-class hunting and fishing, but, 5 days will whet his appetite. there are a bunch of guides in the area besides chelan, try darrellanddads guide service. we have a family-owned home on the icicle, and, grnadma u. lives in leavenworth on the wenatchee river, so, ive fished and hunted all over near where you are visiting. WELCOME TO WASHINGTON!!!

Ok, we are coming to WA for sure. We will rent a motorhome out of SEA starting Wed May 14th, and drive up to the Cashmere area, arrive by Thur for classes. So can anyone give me an idea of some good shore fishing for us while we are there? We would probably pay a charter one day for Chelan, but that would be about it.
Thanks for the help.

DARRELANDDADS FOR LAKE CHELAN, FOR LAKE TROUT. IF YOU WANT TO FISH CLOSER TO CASHMERE, ID TRY ONE OF THE GUIDES IN WENATCHEE FOR THE TROPHY WALLEYE FISHING AROUND ROCK ISLAND. FOR SHORE FISHING, I WOULD DEFINENTLY GIVE FISH LAKE A TRY, CALL THE COVE RESORT FOR FISHING REPORTS FROM THIS LAKE.

The problem with fish lake is the lack of shore access, and the Cove charges to fish off their dock. The last weekend in April is the general fishing season opener and most of the lakes in the Wenatchee heights area will be open. These lakes provide a pretty good opportunity to fish for planted rainbows and have decent shore access. Unforunately the Wenatchee river is closed to fishing and I think you will be too early for the spring chinook season, if there is one at all this year.

OK, what about the Columbia river, can you fish from shore anywhere? And what about the chelan area by the dam, is there fishing there?
Thanks

The Columbia is open for fishing for anything other than trout/salmon. There is ample shore access in Wenatchee, but I am not sure what you would catch other than suckers or squaw fish (aka pike minnow for the politically correct). I have not fished lake Chelan from shore, I think there are some fishing spots at the lower end of the lake. I usually fish the lakes in Manson, which is up lake from Chelan. Out of all the lakes in that area i think Antilon has the most shore access.

I have a few suggestions,

If he wants to trout fish a river, the Yakima river is open and just less than an hour away and it is a blue ribbon fishery. Most beautiful strech is in the canyon on the old river road between Elensberg and Yakima. Plenty of river acsess for the walk-in fisherman. The Yakima above Cle Elem is also excellent. Most of our rivers and streams are not open till june 1st.

For a truly Washington Cascades Experience there are a number of high mountian lakes that would be open by then and close to were you would be. (Note: you should have a partner for these hikes) I personally don't know these lakes that well. You could post a message in the alpine lakes section of this site and someone could probly answer any questions pertaining too.

Just had to say, I worked in Wisconsin a few years back and I spent alot of my off time fishing there. Your Steelheading was better fishing then most of our native Steelhead waters. Go figure.

I welcome you to Washington and enjoy the scenery.
Well its not called Catching!

I would not get your hopes up for fishing any of our high mountain lakes in May, especially since we've had some late snow fall this year. The earliest I have ever been into Stuart lake was around the first of june and there was still snow for the last 1/2 mile to the lake.

Forget about any mountain lakes till late June or later. There is still snow at Leavenworth and still some patches in Cashmere. Fish Lake was mentioned a couple times. It's your best bet for good trout fishing closest to Cashmere. There's bank access on the N. side of the lake at the F&W access area. You can walk the gated road and find plenty of good bank fishing. You can drive into the Cove Resort and pay to fish off their docks. I think they charge $5 a day. People catch thousands of nice fish off this dock. You can also rent a boat and motor or a big party pontoon boat.

You aren't too far from Wenatchee, so there are some good trout lakes in the hills up towards Mission Ridge. Beehive Reservoir is good. Many good lakes about 45 mins east of Wenatchee. The Quincy area lakes are all good fishing and should be in prime condition in May. Jameson Lake off US2 is about 45 mins east of Wenatchee and an excellent trout lake with a resort and boat rentals. Be a good spot to take the motorhome and camp for free if you don't need hookups.

ROCK ISLAND IS THE AREA FOR WALLY'S. THERE ARE GUIDES IN THE AREA, PLUS, SOME GENERAL INFO CAN BE FOUND AT THE TACKLE SHOPS IN WENATCHEE OR DER SPORTSMAN IN LEAVENWORTH (10 MINUTES FROM CASHMERE).
