I picked up a 6hp johnson a while back, it runs great. but after running there is a trickle of black oily gassy leak that runs down the lower unit, leaking from the front above the cavitation plate.

Doesn't seem to effect performance at all, just messy. Mixuture is 50/1

thanks

I think your lower unit has a bad seal in it and water is getting into something greasy. You are seeing the seepage.

Time for some new seals.

If it's black I bet it's burnt oil from the exhaust. Expecially it it just happens for a day or so after you run it and then it stops. All the 2-stroke outboards I have used have done this.

I was thinking something similar to this. I'll get the black oily residue coming out of my '78 evinrude 4hp if I run it at idle too much. I think it's a result of running the carb a little rich and not burning the gas/oil efficiently.

I will also say that replacing all the seals is never a bad idea though. Especially on a used unit.

Seals, gasket kits and its supply goodies :batman: not one water system needs or wants:-$ get her tight and right!

Performance I don't think a issue and how would you tell on a 6hp motor it was reduced to a 4? LOL#-o :-# :cyclopsan

It's black and oily and gassy. it runs out a bit and then stops, at most it's a tablespoon worth. not watery. it does sometimes appear bubbly, but it sees to be oil and gas mixture. I'm gonna have to look again at where it is coming from.
