Wigglefin trolling device locks to the side
I decide to give the Salmon size Wigglefin a try in front of a tube fly, followed by a kidney sinker. At around 2.5mph trolling speed, watching the Wigglefin beside the boat, it locks to one side. Instead of doing the wacky, unpredictable, random wiggling about.
At slower speeds the Wigglefin did it's wacky dance, as witnessed beside the boat. I noticed the new version has 3 or 4 cut outs along its round shape, mine has no cut outs. What is the reason for those cut outs? To perform at higher speeds?
I payed out line, and watched the rod tip. A lot of action telegraphed back to the rod tip. With the high volume of shakers being caught. I could not effectively tell if a shaker was shaking the rod tip, or the shaking was from the Wigglefin. So, I scrapped the Wigglefin even though I had high hopes for it.

Re: Wigglefin trolling device locks to the side
You need a good sized, high quality bead for the wiggle disk to move against. To slow down the action a bit, place a large bead in front as well.
Re: Wigglefin trolling device locks to the side
I buy cheap suction cups from ACE and make my own. Try different sizes, with/without the cut outs, etc. The action varies depending on the size of the cup, if it has cutouts and how you do the cutouts as well as whats behind the cup. I havent tried beads, but Im sure they would also vary the action.

G-man, by large, high quality bead, what would qualify for quality and size? I have a 4mm, might have a 6mm or perhaps a 8mm is the largest I have presently. Have you had good catch rates using the Wigglefin on Salmon? I was trying them during the last Coho trip in the Sound, for the smallish sized fish.

A 4mm bead will work, but it needs to be smooth. Some of the cheaper beads are poorly cast resulting in offset halves or flashing/excess material.
I've used them for salmon but I think the flashers attract salmon from a further distance. I still use a flasher when I fish them, just make sure to use a longer leader if you do as the extra drag will restrict the flasher's movement.

Do you feel the Wigglefin makes a fish catching difference? My main focus for using the Wiggleifin was to do away with the flasher...........dag-nabit!G-Man wrote:A 4mm bead will work, but it needs to be smooth. Much appreciate the input.
Also, what is a suitable adhesive for re-attaching flasher tape when it comes loose? Super glue, shoe goo, contact cement, some sort of auto door trim adhesive?
Re: Wigglefin trolling device locks to the side
I would just buy new tape. You can pick up just about any pattern and color at places like Sportco, Outdoor Emporium or online. You may just try it without any tape. I've removed the tape from about 1/3 of my flashers, sometimes I prefer to run a solid color.
