I collect, repair and use the old 300 series of Mitchell reels exclusively. My goal is to find the reels that are lightly used in spite of their age. The models 300, 306 and 308 are the most practical.
Old reels most often need cleaning and lubrication (the manufacturer recommends clean & lube every year), sometimes very difficult cleaning but they are wonderful reels to use. Just a few months ago (July 2016) at one of my favorite Cascade Mountain lakes, my 8 year old granddaughter caught a huge trout "ALL BY HERSELF".
I tried her outfit for a few casts. She was using a Mitchell 300A (that I had found on eBay and cleaned and serviced) perfectly matched to a medium light action 7 foot rod. What a sweet combination!
These reels may be old but they are still outstanding to use.

Any of use that used the 1950's Mitchell 300 we still reel left hand on spinning gear. and right on level wind

They were wonderful reels. I had a couple and bought my first one in 1960 at the ripe old age of 16. I used it for everything, winter/summer steelhead, trout in both lakes and rivers, bobber fishing for crappie and perch in backwater sloughs/lakes off the Columbia and even plunking off bars on the Columbia. I was a one reel guy because that was all I could afford.

Not sure what happened, but back then one rod, one reel is all a guy or gal needed. Well, that and a fly rod.

Very true! That is the thing about life now. I went by my dads house. Hes been in a nursing home in rehab after surgery. I was cleaning out his garage . I found another Mitchell 300 reel with extra spool in a plastic case all in a Mitchell plastic reel box . Dad is like me when it comes to never throw or give gear away. What a great find.
