Any Good Novels/Books to Share?

Post by kuttkilla » Tue Apr 08, 2008 4:47 pm

:study: Hey guys! I love reading so I was wondering if any of you have read any great books recently. I enjoy philosophy and spirituality and am reading a book right now called "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle. It has really opened up my eyes and made me examine who I really am. I would highly recommend reading this book. Not everyone will become enlightened or become "aware," as the author puts it when reading this book, but many just might, and I had to share :). To read this book for information is perhaps, to miss the point. The point, for me, is the awakening experience the author encouraged, prompted and was realized in me. Truly a gift and truly, priceless.

The second book I am reading for fun is not a philosophical read, but just fun fiction, and stands in stark contrast to "A New Earth". It's called "The Ruins" by Scott Smith, a horror novel. It was a national bestseller and is now a major motion picture. Just thought I would share those two novels, and would love to have any and all suggestions of novels you've read that you highly recommend. The book by Eckhart Tollle single handedly is the best book I've ever read...it's both empowering and inspiring. Worth a serious look. Thanks guys!

Hey Kutt,
I like to read adventure books like Michener's Centennial or Space. Great reads indeed. However the book that has stuck with me more than any other (besides the Bible) is Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life." You read 1 chapter a day for 40 days. Then think about each chapter for the day. It has opened up a multitude of happiness for me. Happiness that was alway there, I just didn't know it. Awesome book.
Where you go is less important than how you get there.

Yep. I totally understand, now, finally. After reading "A New Earth" you become "aware" of your unhappiness or lack of happiness (or in this case mine) and are able to rid yourself of this unhappiness and negativity. This book opened my eyes more than any other book, but many books can do the same thing...such as the wonderful "Purpose Driven Life"... Thanks for sharing Joe.

I am planning on reading "A New Earth" It is a highly recomended book by many of my, well let's say anonymous colleagues of mine. I like the so called self spiritual texts.

As far as good fun fiction I enjoy Chuck Palahniuk my favorite of his is not "Fight Club" (which I really liked) is "survivor" it is a fun, crazy, sadistic, sad, comedy of a read.
Well its not called Catching!

The Purpose Driven Life is great. A must read for everyone.
Kutt - I am finishing up a great read but it might not be up your alley, 7 Habits of Highly Successful People by Stephen Covey. Amazing book and it really gets you thinking and working on personal growth.
If your into spiritual books any of Bruce Wilkinson's are really good. Also, a must read is Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen.

I also really enjoyed and recommend Twelve Pillars by Jim Rohn/Chris Widener and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino.

Kutt:
Wish I had your passion for reading and philosophy. Stuck in two philosophy classes this quarters, and I'm up to my neck in reading for both of em. The one I got the most work in is Ethical Issues in the Environment. Book is titled "Environmental Ethics." Not quite a textbook but not really a novel. It's a real good book for someone who really enjoys reading up on a bunch of different theories and applications for and of environmental issues and ethics...

Haha, I didn't realize that "A New Earth" was on her book club until it said it's on its cover! Haha, nevertheless, she picked a really deep, insightful, engaging, and enlightening book. Let the transformation begin! I'm not a real fan of Joel Olsteen, neither is the pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle, because many times he glamorizes everything, but yet again, to each their own, like you said. Some people don't like certain reads/genres, and others' just love em! Thanks for sharing fishnislife!

Sam, yeah I know what you mean. We have to take 4 ethics courses at our university, but I look forward to each one with so much anticipation. Healthcare Ethics will be my next and last 400 level philosophy class after the one I finish up this summer.

Do you have any favorite books you have read? I'm always looking to add more quality, self-improvement books, along with fun fiction.

Kite Runner is a must read IMO. Lots of discussion about it, and it's a great book.

I often read true crime novels. A book I liked was Dave Reicherts "Chasing the Devil" about the investigation of the Green River Killer. And another which I'm sure I'll take some heat. Motley Crue's "The Dirt" its probably the blue print of self destruction but very entertaining and hilarious.

One of my favorite books is Filth. Anything by Irvine Welsh is a good bet.

Adventures of Huck Finn is another favorite of mine.

1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World are all good ones too.

Hey Kutt,
You say you like fun fiction. If you think you can read a book through a multitude of tears created by laughter, try some of Patrick McManus' books. I have a few of his books and they make me laugh so hard I can hardly read them. They are like sitting around a campfire listening to someone spin a yarn so bizarre that you laugh yourself right off your stump. Great reads indeed.

You can go to Amazon.com I'm sure and search for;
The Grasshopper Trap
A Fine and Pleasant Misery
Never Look a Gift Fish in the Mouth
the list goes on and on. Patrick McManus was for a while a literature professor at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. He grew up in the Pack River region of Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho. His childhood adventures are legendary. His friends Rancid Crabtree and Retch Sweeney used to keep him in trouble throughout his entire childhood. I promise you'll like his books.
If I'm not mistaken, his stories were published for a long time on the last pages of Outdoor Life magazine.
