2 years ago I fished the Cowlitz at Barrier Dam. Today I attempted to recreate that magic.

I hooked into two dark kings. Shortly after that a crew of dudes posted upstream from me and proceeded to pull in 4 silvers.

Position is key in this fishery!

For the future readers of this report, water level was about 6500 CFS. The weekend had a large storm, tons of water. When night set the rain was rediculous. The dudes gave up.

For future reference, for me:

6' leader with corky. Scent is good
Baitcaster is not good for this area. I need to get a spinning rod setup, preferably 12' or longer.

There is still time to fish this fishery

If anyone located in the greater seattle area has a 12' + long spinning rod combo for sale (OR FREE, HEH HEH HEH), let me know in the comments!

If you want a solid spinning combo it doesn't need to be more than 8'6-9'6
Most people in that area who drift fish aren't using more than that.
But if you're just planning to Bobber fish the pool with eggs that's when the super long rods come in handy.
Best of luck!
-@snatchinglips they've been coming in huge numbers for a few weeks now. Just search "Cowlitz fish report" on google and go to the Tacoma power website every Monday. Each Monday there is a report of how many of each fish they recovered at the dam.
Last week over 4190 coho (over 3100 adults) were recovered by Tacoma power according to their website.
Hope this helps!

sorry I didn't see your post earlier. my spinning outfit is 11'6. I like the control the long rod gives you, but I don't like noodle rods so much. I want some backbone, especially if a chinook gets on. sundirds in Chehalis just had okuma rods on for ridiculously low prices, the sst version. this is my first year using one and I have been very impressed. and I see a lot of them showing up on the river. tonight I was drift fishing, float fishing and casting spoons with my spinning outfit. pretty versatile setup.
