Went out of Shilshole area 10 about noon. Cold as heck, water was like glass, clear blue sky. saw only 2 other fishers.. Went with "Datsun" Michael, from the forum. Our target was crab, with spending the in between time bottom fishing. We scored big on the crab. Our first pull was after about a 2 hour soak. We had our limit of dungies. Some were about 7.5" also got two red rock. On the second pull we probably had another 6-7 legal dungies, but of course through them back, we looking for a few more red rock.
Caught a few flounder.... but the bonus was that we each our limit of one rockfish a piece.
Fished mostly around the artificial reef just South of Richmond beach. It's called "The Trees"
The rockfish were fun, they fight kind of like a bass in my opinion. If you count an extra crab... that was one of the Red Rock crabs. Another boat rushed up on us just as we were pulling out pots, kind of scared me, I thought we were going to be boarded. Of course we were doing everything legal, but it turned out to be another fisherman saying they had their limit of crab also.

Cool Quad!

Speaking of rockfish, how do you feel it is doing in Area 10? Do you ever target rockfish (not lingcod) as your first choice for the trip???

Reason I ask is that the WDFW has proposed no retention of rockfish in Areas 6-13, due to the low populations. NOAA may go even further in trying to give rockfish some protection or help rebuild the stocks...

TomD, well,, I can't say that I would go out and make rockfish the target of the day, just because you are only allowed the first legal rockfish that you catch to keep. I am aware of the talk of re habitating the rockfish. But I have found a spot now that has produced each time i've gone there. That would be nice to see.

Nice catch! What were you using to entice the dungies?

two pots had salmon collars/scraps. two pots had halibut scraps. My local grocery puts all there scraps out for $1.00 a lb. All pots did well, but the Hali this time did really well.

Wow awesome haul!
I have been catching alot of rockfish this year. Most of them are species that don't get very big. I don't see the rockfish closure helping the target species much. Thanks for the report.

Mmmmm! We Filipinos love those crabs with vinegar and garlic with a little black pepper to dip in and a hot bowl of Jasmine rice. Man I'm getting hungry. Nice catch, thanks for the report.

Thanks a bunch for taking me out Quadfather, I had a ton of fun! First ever crabbin, first ever flounder! and the water was smooth like glass, best ever. It was a bit cold, especially when we were underway but 10/10 for rating!

I'm almost afraid to go out again as how can it compare to that run! All I can say is wow. And thanks again for the trip.

Mr. Quadfather. My finace and I are heading out this Sunday to go crabbing. He always crab area 8-2 south of Hat Island during the summer, but it is closed during the winter. We are going to crab out of shilshole. My I ask where you picked up your crab? Area, depths, ect? We would love to come home with some crabs--we hate getting skunked. Thank you. -Nikosan
