New to this forum but have been lurking for a month or two as I've just started getting back out on the water. Never fished Brewster before and it was all the mad-house of boats it was advertised to be. Got on the water at 5:15 and stayed until 1:30. With the air temps in the upper 90's, things starting clearing out after 9am.

First time at Brewster, first time targeting sockeye and I thought I was prepared. Dodger, squid in pink and white, marinated coon shrimp, red barbless hooks but we got completely skunked. We were in the right place as we saw people catching all around us. We tried depths from 5 to 35 feet throughout the day. Had the right speed as we were matching most of the boats around us.

Obviously something missing.

Everyone on this board is so great about sharing and helpful, if anyone has suggestions, I'd love to know what I might be doing wrong. Might try again next weekend if I can get over there.

Thanks

K-Los

Brewster fishing can be a headache for sure. The fisrt things I always start to change are my bait size, leader length, dodger size, lure size.

I usually break a shrimp into 3-4 baits, just little hook sized chunks, heads get tossed.

Leaders start at 16" and work down to 12" though when I use a shorter leader I usually use a "0" dodger and when they are the full 16 half run the "00"

I almost always use the macks chacha squidder, same one that the kokanee guys swear buy but retied with slightly larger hooks and 20lb leader. Chinook will hit this gear so I like to be ready for the event.

Other than that, pay attention to where you are and your electronics. The Fish seem to stack up a lot more than the spread of boats shows, so if you do get one, try and stay close or swing back (easier said than done)

I forgot to say when I do change lure size, I go smaller. Little pink tube flies to replace the squid, smaller smile blade. you get the idea.

I Agree with above. Oftentimes less and smaller is more. Make sure the pink or red small squidder is really getting whipped around but at a slow speed. I use minimum 30 lb leader to help with that action

One thing I might add to all this good info above is Scent Control. Wash your hands and or wear rubber gloves before handling your bait. When I went down there a week ago we were running 8" leaders behind 1/0 dodgers with size 1 and 2 red hooks a smile blade and topped with sand shrimp. Took us about 6 hours to limit. Best of luck next time!

Agree with the good advice above. First thing to check is leader length and motion of the presentation behind the flasher. Also agree with the smaller is better sentiment. Almost all of our hook-ups last itme out came on kokanee tackle (hooks a little larger, but other wise kokanee sized dodgers and terminal tackle). Always wear my gloves and my experiment with AFK on our last trip together sowed it makes a difference (these fish smell their home water form hundreds of miles away (parts per billion) so if you've got any residual motor oil or sunscreen or hand soap on your hands it may put them off the bite.

Good luck and tight lines!

I use the setups from http://gonefishingnw.com/sockeye. They have been working well for me, although I haven't hit Brewster yet this year.
