Eating salmon roe

OK... maybe this is a little weird. I do not fish the rivers for salmon/steelhead,etc. So I do not have any use for my discarded salmon eggs.
I recently caught some nice cohos that came with shweet eggs. Does anybody out there eat their salmon eggs?
Do you have any suggestions for how to prepare them? There is always Google, but I thought I'd ask here.
My fishing friend suggested something with salmon roe and scrambled eggs?

Whata ya got?

I dont know how to cook them, but i have a buddy who kicks them just like teriyaki chicken (kind of) with whatever teriyaki sauce he wants and on top of rice

Hey Quad,
I've only had salmon roe as sushi and I can honestly say it's the only fish roe I've not cared for. Too fishy tasting for my palate.
If you try them, let us know how they taste! If I were not so interested in the eggs for curing (pending I can catch a fish one of these days), I'd be tempted to try cooking with them. I'm into that culinary experimentation.

Apparently you just seperate them from the membrane and put them in some sort of salt water solution and eat them. I've had them on deviled eggs and that was pretty darn good, but get too much and I still feel like I'm eating bait. Herring roe is good on sushi though, same concept, just more pop when you bite in.

Never tried salmon roe but had shrimp roe once and really liked it just straight off the shrimp and into the mouth.

I don't care for it, but my wife loves roe. Last year she bought some roe in a little jar from uwajamaya. It was 4oz of chum roe for only $12. Couldn't believe it.


When my dad came over for x mas last year we tried to do our own roe with steelhead, found some you tube sites. Pretty much separate the roe from the skeins, soak in water and salt with a little rice wine and soy sauce.

I never tried it, but they liked it.

heres a link on how to make ikura, its the salmon roe used to sushi, this is the "standard" recipe, my favorite, this site explain everything you need to know to make some good ikura,

You could always bake them. Try to get a single layer on a cookie sheet, or something like that and just bake them. It doesn't take long and they change consistancy and appearance the way the meat changes. Once you've tried this, you can experiment with different seasonings.

I accidentally tasted some when filleting a Salmon, if that counts as eating some. Was a tad salty, and very fishy. So much so, I did not volunteer for seconds. Definitely an acquired taste.

I wonder how smoking the eggs before consuming would be?

Could be a job for the "new" smoker/grill Quad.

Put your roe in a large vessel filled with a super saturated salt solution (100% brine). Gently stir the put with the roe for a good hour. Commercially a little sodium nitrate would be added too. Next take the roe out and rinse with fresh brine. Next set the roe out to dry for a little bit, just to dry on the outside, you could pat it dry with pt's. Layer the roe and salt in a container that can breathe a bit, commercially, wooden boxes are used, I’d just use the disposable Tupperware type boxes from the store. Store it in the fridge for at least a week or two. Take the roe out and gently rub the skeins till al the roe is separate. Take the separated roe and gently stir in a vessel of brine again till it plumps put it in a jar and eat till ya puke! =)

I've also had roe with the Eskimos, they call it eyeball soup. Boil salmon carcasses and make a stock, dump in as much roe as you dare simmer for a few minutes, when the roe turns white it's just right. Yummmmmmmmy.... urp.

Salmon roe is awesome. I prefer it two ways. one is to boil in a salted water and over white rice with Shoyu (soy sauce). The other is salted for 48 hours in a porcelin or ceramic bowl. NO METAL. Let it sit in the salt , rinse and let dry a lil. I then cut it up and eat like that. They are excellent in Crepes and in eggs. I wont eat Sockeye ,Pink ,or Chum eggs. I strictly eat Coho or Chinook eggs. Eggs salted then seperated on crackers are a big back east hit. Ive been to a few weddings in New York past couple years and all have had salmon caviar. But then again I eat alot of things other people wont. If you clean your silvers check the livers for spots. If there are spots dont eat but if not enjoy the livers too. Its all good if prepared properly. In the heads there are salmon cheeks. Those are to die for. Better then Halibut cheeks.

What? No Chum roe? It's absolutely the most coveted and most expensive of all the species. :scratch: :scratch:

We grew up eating roe from silvers and kings. Its just my preference. My sis in NY loves chum eggs and they served it at my wedding. When seperating the eggs off the skein coho and king were easier then doing it to chum eggs.
Dont open a jar of Pautskes and eat them.LOL.... The other thing is salmon roe allthough very tastey ,its not one of my most favorite roes. My favorite roe is from the sliver mullet. Then the red mullet,then carp roe. I eat mullet roe almost everyday.No on the walleye. I caught nothing of any kind of filet size fish.

New hours at work. I now work from 6 am till 4:30 pm m-sat.Its been awhile since Ive been paid so Im working longer for less pay. I wake up go to work ,come home eat dinner take meds and in bed. What a Life?
