Sunset Lake in Pierce Co?

Post by nutjobrob » Fri Nov 08, 2013 1:38 pm

Anyone know if it's public or private? It's the one in Wilkeson. It looks like it might be private and owned by Sunset Lake Camp, but WDFW has it on their stocking reports from last summer.

Could very well be private land all around. Looks like most of the shoreline is private homes or a park/camp of some sort. I'm not sure how excited I'd get about the plant, it was in July and they only dropped 500 fishes in. I'll bet the water is pretty warm by that time of the year.

It is private. Back in the late 80's it was called Double Rainbow Lake and had a small hatchery on site that supported the lake. The fish were 10" to 4 or 5 lbs. there was also camping around the lake. It was catch and keep sold by the pound.

Double Rainbow Lake and Sunset Lake are 2 separate lakes.

You're right. I didn't realize there was another lake farther up the road from Double Rainbow Lake. The kids always caught fish at Double Rainbow so we never went further.

I was always under the understanding that it was illegal for the game department to plant a lake that is private and/or has no public access.

Maybe they have an arrangement to purchase the fish through them?
Silver Lake is Pierce County is private, only access is through the resort and the state stocks it every year, or maybe that's just when the resort is open?

The state did not stock Silver lake when the resort was closed a few years ago. I dont know, and with a quick search on WDFW could not find what the rule is. Maybe it is considered open to the public even if it is a fee access. You don't have to stay at the resort to use the launch, you only have to pay a few bucks. Or that was the way it was the last time I was there.

Yeah, wasn't necessarily the stocking that peaked my interest. Just something I ran across while trying to research it. I'm always on the hunt for nice un/underdeveloped stillwater close to home.
The stocking is puzzling though. I would think that if WDFW lists it on the stocking reports, that you and I are paying for that.

Yeah, I've been known to walk to the end of a street and jump in with the float tube. :)

As far as I understand it, Mr. Henley, the owner of the Silver Lake Resort, who is now deceased, made an agreement with the game department that every year he would stock the lake with brown trout if the game department did the same with rainbow. Not a fact. Just what I heard.
