ice fishing for trout

I fish on the East coast and in inland Massachusetts. MassWildlife does a great job stocking our nearby brooks and ponds with trout. During the winter, I set tip-ups on those ponds with shiners. Each trip I do....ok... about 1 fish per trip. I also fish there in the spring and catch many trout on marshmellow and worm and chartruse powerbait. Is there a way to catch trout on other baits like salmon eggs, worms and powerbait? This may seem out of season, but ice fishing is one of my favorite parts of fishing. Anything much aprechiated.

Xiphias Gladius I think all those baits sound fine for ice fishing you just have to try them to see what the fish want. Don't get stuck on one bait. Change it up often, one day the fish may love salmon eggs and the next they might completely ignore them and only want worms. Ask other fisherman what they are using most will be happy to help. Are you still in Massachsetts?

I am still in Massachusetts. How do you fish salmon eggs, power eggs, and powerbait on a tip-up? Wouldn't the floating bait hit the main line and spook the fish or is there another way to keep it away.

I am not sure about tip ups I dont think they are legal here in washington anyone know? If they are legal here we could only use one so they would be kind of pointless. The salmon eggs won't really float so I don't see them as having a problem with the fish being shy of the main line. As far as the power bait I had not thought of that before now. I am relatively new to ice fishing and have not really noticed this to be an issue but I think it makes sense. Maybe a drop shot rig or do you remember those lures they used to sell on TV that would swim away from you? What if you tied something like that to your line so that the line did not go straight down and allowed your bait to float free of the mail line.
