Warm Water Species Conference?

Post by sparky1doug » Sun Oct 17, 2010 4:55 pm

Something to ponder, I'm seeking your opinions on the subject of Warm Water Species Management in the state of Washington. The growing topic of Northern Pike and their presence in the waters of Washington State. We have all been following this topic with varying opinions (which is good) but one thing can be sure, it effects many fisheries which are close to our hearts. The WDFW and the Kalispel Tribe have dedicated much time and effort to monitor and study the Pike presence and spread. Bruce Bolding (WDFW) has spoken to many clubs on this subject and presented the current management expectations. We can all agree that those management decisions effect Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Tiger Muskie, Walleye, Northern Pike, and possibly Bull Trout, Cutthroat, and Salmon fisheries either directly or indirectly. I would like to propose a Warm Waters Species Conference in early 2011 where open discussion of the topic would be encouraged, a meeting of the minds. Certainly all parties involved would be invited, fisherman, WDFW, Kalispel Tribe, Muskies Inc. CMA, NIPA, Bass Clubs, Salmon Clubs and others. The mere fact that Northern Pike are here to stay suggests a clearly defined management plan be implemented if for no other reason but to protect current fisheries and management goals. At this point I'm soliciting your honest and open opinions on this proposed conference.

Perhaps the previous email was a little vague on what I'm asking for. As of yet there is no set agenda, thus gleaned from your responses. Yes, a topic to be discussed is the Northern Pike and its effects. My vision is a chance for groups with similar interests to be futher informed and educated with the research and data already collected. A chance to meet others involved in warm water species and discuss how as a group we can assist in management efforts and better understand how they effect our fisheries. My experiences while working ADFG, IFG, WDFW and several local tribes has taught me a couple of things. (#1) Without good verifiable information and data you can not make sound decisions. (#2) To educate fisherman and the public you must be knowledgeable and accessible. (#3) If we can work together we have a far greater chance of success. I believe the WDFW has achieved #1 and #2 and it is our responsibility to accomplish #3. I have received many positive comments already, it would seem many of you are interested. So post here or feel free to email me personally I'd like to hear your opinions.
