Spirit Lake...

Well the debate is heating up again. It sounds to me that if they do open the lake to fishing it will not be open to the regular Joes like me. Just another elite fishery like Coldwater. Too bad, sounds like some big fish in there for a while. Maybe when the overpopulation causes them to shrink down they will let us brutes in LOL.

sounds like you need to stop limiting the way you fish and try other methods.

sounds like you wont get to fish this lake at all unless you try and get a permit every saturday, from memorial day-october. they are only going to give out 10 permits a day! which is crazy, you would have to get there at 8:00 friday night just to maybe get a permit for the next day.

i think its just crazy.

"it will not be open to the regular Joes like me. Just another elite fishery like Coldwater"

Coldwater is "special regs" and bait is not allowed.

Hey Bill,
I know that I am limited in my fishing methods and I am trying more artificial lures and such, but normally when the regs say "selective gear" it means fly fishing and I have nothing against those who fly fish it is just not something that I can do on my budget. You will have to admit that just like bass fisherman consider trout fisherman inferior, fly fisherman consider all others as beneath them. I am a roughfisher...just an old hillbilly trying to catch as many different kinds of fish as I can. Trying to get into their enviroment and figure out how to trick them into taking what I am offering or changing what I am offering based on what they are taking. If I can not/will not eat it I put it back.

How do you know fly fishermen consider people who use bait "mouth breathers"??

I bet you could find a fair fly outfit at a garage sale and at a pretty good price.

I'd focus on learning other methods rather than trying to figure out the hierarchy of fishing groups. I've fished just about every way and for just about every freshwater fish. One thing I'm still learning is how methods for one fish cross over for another and they can be very effective.

One that I'm fiddling with now is plugs for trout. I had a friend turn me on to this 7 years or so ago. I used to fish the seep lakes over below the Potholes reservoir every year for trout and thought I know what size trout the lakes put out and also when the best time of year was to fish for these trout. My buddy brought a photo into work of a limit of 5 trout caught from one of these lakes in July. The smallest fish on the stringer was around 4 pounds. The biggest was around 5 1/2. His method, a small rapala trolled down in the water column.

I have been reading about fellows using crankbaits for trout. That sounds kind of interesting. What I have heard, for the most part, is that they use smaller cranks and in trout patterns. I am going to try this when the water warms up a bit.

I do not troll, because it is too hard to in a canoe alone LOL, there is an interesting article about trolling plugs on California lakes you might want to read. http://www.fishsniffer.com/wiza/010901p ... nique.html
I have a few of the rapala lures that will definetly get wet this spring too!

You asked "How do you know fly fishermen consider people who use bait "mouth breathers"??"
Just from the experience I have with some and the way they talk about other methods of fishing.

You stated "I bet you could find a fair fly outfit at a garage sale and at a pretty good price."
I am sure I could, but I was looking just the other day at a fly supply catalog pricing some material for tying jigs and noticed that the fly line was anywhere from $35 to $90 for a spool. That is about half of my budget for a year of fishing. Until I can afford to do it right I will not do it at all. It is like when my kids need art supplies even if we have to stretch the budget a little we will get them the best we can because I do not want my daughter to think, because she produces an inferior project, that she is no good with colored pencils when in fact the fault is in the 50-cent pencils I bought.

I do plan to use some flies this year, but not with a fly outfit...wet flies. Do you think it will work? I did catch a nice brown trout (my avatar) with a wolly bugger. This year I will catch fish with jigs and flies that I made. Looking forward to that thrill!!

So from that limited experience you cast that "opinion" on all fly fishers, or people in general? Wow, I really feel sorry for you. There are a$$holes everywhere and in every activity, be it work or play, ie: life. Now I have met some gear anglers who have the same mentality towards fly fisherman so using your logic, all gear fisherman are horrible people. I am glad not everyone is so judgmental like you, cause I have met really great people doing either activity, gear fishing or fly fishing.

Oh yeah, I am a core fly fisher, but also gear fish, and can give a great gear fisherman a serious run for their money.
Any takers? LOL

I am a mouth breather when my allergies are acting up.Anyways, why do people think selective fisheries is only for flyfishing?Read the regs, selective fisheries is No Bait Allowed, but you can use lures as long as they are single barbless hook.Only in Fly Fishing Only lakes can you not use anything but flyfishing gear. Some of my favorite lakes are selective.Sometimes lures out fish flies sometimes not.But you should never just stick to baitfishing only because you then just cheat yourself out of an opportunity to catch fish.Just my opinion.

Lewis I have fished flies on mono, trolling. Dry flies! Also wet. Your canoe would be perfect if you have 2 lb. leader. You go very slow. Barely moving. Works for trout or crappie.

It is not the bass fishermen or the fly fishermen that look down on you, it is your own self image. Why do you do that? I have been flyfishing for 40 years and don't look down on anyone. I have taught many people how to fly fish. If you were in the Spokane area, I would gladly teach you how to fly fish and tie flies, most likely give you a rod and line, with some flies. I have done this several times.

Lewis, fly fishing is only another way of fishing. Like trolling or bait casting, it is just a technique.

Hey Marc,

I was born in Colville and I lived in Spokane from 1965 (9yo) until 1971 (15yo) and we practically lived on the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers. I wish I lived in that part of the country now, but I married a California girl and she wants nothing to do with what she calls “snow country” and real winters.

I appreciate what you said about the fly fishermen I was just projecting a stereo-type and did not intend to offend. As far as my self image, it is fine. I could not care less what people think of me and my fishing, like I said I am a thick-skinned roughfisher. I catch fish for the thrill and, hopefully the meat when I can.

I really do wish I were in your area so that I could take you up on your offer. My 3 brothers all live in Montana and the oldest fly fishes and I have often thought it would be fun to go and have him teach me, but that is a lot of miles and lot of time to consider. I have found a fellow here in the Vancouver area that makes his living tying flies, lecturing about fly fishing and writing books. He advertised he would teach one hour classes in tying for $15 and will sell me a “grab bag” of material (minimum $20 value) for $10. I am going to meet with him on Friday and see what I can learn.

I think fishermen shouldn't get stuck on a single technique as there's lots of cross-over methods for other species.

Night fishing for trout with great big flies.
Bass tackle and half ounce jigs for rock fish.
rapalas for trout (my favorite method)
fly fishing for bass and pike
jigs and grubs for trout (black works good)

Another thing to do is watch the old fishing shows. Some of the old style methods (and lures) haven't been used for a long time. Fish aren't used to them. The retro methods can be very effective.

Lewis-

There are times that I would like more than anything to not live in snow country#-o

Your friend in Vancouver sounds like a pretty good contact. With the grab bag, you should be able to tie up some jigs and wet flies. Let us know how it worked out.

Bill W-

I and a couple of other fly casters are venturing into new waters in a couple of weeks fly casting for Muskie's. Should be fun:bounce: :compress:
