How To Rig To Prevent Tangling

Post by FishingFool » Sat Jul 02, 2011 11:57 pm

When I was young, this is the setup I always remember being used to panfish and the likes. Usually have 2 loops for 2 hooks, but this gives you the idea.

Now the problem I'm having is, the line leading to the hook, always twists around the main line, preventing the hook and bait from dangling.

I've tried using 3-swivels but that seemed to make it worse.

I've been trying using just a palomar knot so it's basicly a "drop shot". The hookup ratio is not good when it's cast out far. At about 30% I'll say. But the nice thing is, it's always on the lip.

I'm also trying making the egg loop a little big longer on the main line. Then actually cutting 1 end of the loop and snelling the hook on that line. It's only about 2" long. I was worried half my setup would unravel, but it appears to work fine. I'm still getting it wrapping around my main line though.

How do I prevent this wrapping the main line issue? Is it even possible? Very annoying.

Yep! Use heavier pound test mono. This is how we get at sea bass and perch at westport. When you use thicker mainline and leaders it just pops right out. Otherwise they sells spreaders for this setup made of wire. We use rocks for weight tied on the bottom but if you're not worried about snags then weights will work.

I have 8# test for main. Was using 6# test flouro for the hook.

What I find is that when I cast out I stop the line with my hand so the weight drops first, then the hooks. If Im dropping off a pier or dock I hand strip my line slowly to the bottom. This will help keep you from having everything cattywampus.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

Nate pretty much summed it up. In the case of this rig, stiff is better.

Maxima Chameleon is about the best if you want to stick with 6 or 8 pound line, but it does not cast light baits well. That is really the reason the "drop shot" method was created, because it gave the same result without the tangles. Still, drop shotting is not a normal bait method where you wait for the fish to take it deep.

Good luck on trying to find a better way. They say all things are possible, but I have never figured it out.#-o
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
