At the show this weekend I saw a couple boats that had (for lack of a better term if Im wrong) the hull was made from the aluminum diamond plate type material.

Wouldnt this create a huge drag on the boat in the water?

I'm pretty sure they just diamond plate the sides of the hull, not the bottom of the hull. All for visual appearance....

DP is mostly for appearance. It does give a measure of protection against stone chips but really is there for eye appeal. Same as using it as deck material. Yes, it doesn't rot, but it gets really slick when wet.

What a horrible idea!

Extra drag at less than planing speeds....

More weight for the same thickness of panel....

I guess the one good thing is they can use shoddier welding practices and hide the warped plates with it.
