Lamiglass Kenai Special - best reel/application advice please

Post by coretron22 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:04 pm

I have this beaut of a rod,
Kenai Special
but had been using it trolling for trout...overkill, I know, but now I have a better trout setup.
What is the best application for this rod, and a nice reel to pair it with?

Casting for Salmon in rivers?
Trolling in lakes?
...other?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I was at the Lamiglas sale in Woodland and took a look at one of those rods. I'm sorry, but it felt like I was holding a pool cue in my hand. If I was going to use the rod I'd consider trolling for Columbia river kings, trolling for tiger muskie or fishing for sturgeon. I suppose you could also use it to cast heavy spoons in large rivers for kings. I would in no way shape or form use it in conjunction with a downrigger. Depending upon how much you are willing to spend on a reel and if you'd like to be able to cast a reasonable distance with it will help narrow down the selection. I suppose it would be good to know if you have the spinning or casting version of the rod. If money was not really a concern and you have the casting version, I'd consider a Tekota 500LC or an Abu Garcia 7000 synchro line counter reel.

ITs a king rod. Its able to toss some weight and handle big kings. Paired with a good sized bait caster and 30-40lb braid and its on. Id go with an abu 5500c3 and braid or go 6500 with some 25lb mono. Youll be able to toss into the faster rivers like the cow for fall kings and be able to play them with ease once they get into the fast water and just turn there body sideways on ya. They dont even tire out doing this I swear. I personally dont like rods as heavy as the kenai killer, but they are very capable of handling some monster kings.
More fish please!

Yep I'm right with ya. That is one stiff rod! Way too much for anything but the Columbia. It was made for big fish, big lures and fast current. Oh yeah Kenai special. That would need a big caster or spinner depending on the type of rod, for a spinner, like a 4000 or more like 5000 size spinner. Sorry haven't looked at casters in a while.

Thanks guys. It'll be my future big-fish rod then.
Sooo...now I can start thinking about a salmon trip. Though I am a WA native, I have never fished for Salmon before. Time to do some homework and join the fun...

cheers,
-Corey
