I've always wanted to invest in a dash camera for my vehicle. Mainly to protected myself against all those insurance scammers. You hear lots of horror stories. I had an opportunity to buy a new Blackvue HR500GW-HD for $250 shipped. From what I've read, this is one of the 2 highest rated cameras out at the moment. The other is the Finevu CR-500HD.

I received it quick. These aren't my pics, but from the person selling them.







I have mine mounted the same way, right behind the rear view mirror. You can barely see it while in the driver seat. Looking outside in, hard to see too. Just got done doing a semi-install. I plan on hardwiring it into my fuse box in the car, just waiting for my add-a-circuit to come in. So for the time being, I will use my cigarette socket to power the device. I tested the camera at home first though.

1st step is locating a place to mount. Then plan on where you want to run the wires. I wanted a clean install. So I removed the cover on my A-pillar to run the wires behind it. In my vehicle, there's pretty clearance between the dash and pillar, but not enough for the cig-plug. So I had to fish a wire from the top opening and down underneath the dash. Tie the wire to the smaller plug that connects to the cam device and pull it up. Worked like a charm.

I ran the small plug where I wanted to. Used one of the sticky cord holders to secure it. Then ran the wires back above the windshield and tuck it behind the ceiling liner. Pull out any remaining slack and covered up the A-pillar. Very quick.

Ran the cig-plug past my fuse box for the future install and plugged it into my cig socket. Played with some of the settings and such. Tomorrow will be my 1st trip out on the road with it. Hopefully it works as well as I expected.

Note though. The device comes with a 16GB SD card. I bought a 32GB Class10 card off ebay for $25. Supposely, this will give me over 9hrs of recording in 1080p @ 30FPS. If I use the video compression setting, it will be just short of 14hrs.

So, does it record more than one way? I would think that the most useful thing for it would be to record the inside of the car to catch thieves.

This is just for recording out in front. I may install a rear one some day.

Can you swivel it to turn it around when you leave the car? That would be useful. I've been thinking of getting a rear one too to look out after my trailer and tires while I'm parked at the launch. I wish all the launches had cameras in the trees.

With the stock mount, I can only rotate on the y-axis. It's easy to step multiple cameras to view those areas. They have a special backup battery hookup system. It can start recording with motion or shock sensor.

Well, after playing around with the dash camera for a couple of days, I'm somewhat disappointed in the image quality. Maybe I was expecting too much? I don't know. One thing I was hoping for was good license plate capture. It's just not happening with this dashcam. Unless the vehicle is stopped in front of you and you're stopped too. Can't see it any other way.


I still think a dashcam is a good investment. I just don't think this camera is worth the commanding price. I'm glad I got a nice discount on it.

shoulda coulda woulda gotta contour and a handful of sticky slider mounts.. coulda mounted that thing anywhere..

plus the lense rotates 180, so no matter where you mount it you can get right side up video still..

haha, i dove and pounded my chest on the gunnel.. again! where i was already bruised from dropping a trophy (to me) bass..
it sunk, i shed and emo tear for a minute then my boy and i laughed and kept on fishing.. and we slayed it!

take a good look at this pic.. its right over the left side of the boat..




srsly, take a mask and someone go find it!! haha, its waterproof, so it should still work..
my buddy dropped his gopro this yr in the snow. we found it a month later after several storms, battery still charged and used it that day!

Sorry man too much happening at the salt mine to do any diving...... How's that new sprout coming along?????
