I have always used herring successfully but I am interested in the Salmon Feast. I wonder how well that stuff works.

I don't fish with Smelly Jelly that much, but when I do I prefer the shrimp and herring scent. I usually fish with Mikes Glo Scent for both salmon and steelhead in anise and shrimp scent. I prefer Mikes Glo Scent because it doesn't seem to be as messy as the Smelly Jelly, I have had better success with it, and it is cheaper.

The smelly jelly that I mostly use is herring and shrimp. But anise and special mix (special mix is shrimp and anise mixed) work pretty good as well. Nitro makes a salmon and steel head scent but I have never used it. I have nitro grease in salmon egg flavor and that seems to work pretty good on cohos but not Chinooks. Krill works really well, I have only used the grease though, so I don't know about oil. Lunker lotion also has good herring scent, in fact I like that better than the smelly jelly brand herring scent. Dick nite just came out with a salmon/trout/steelhead scent and I cant wait to get my hands on that. Be careful with smelly jelly, last week when I was at mineral I was using the shrimp flavor and it got on the side of my boat, I cant get it off, its still there. Also Mikes brand scent makes a good shrimp scent. But if worst comes to worst you would think that all trout attractors would work for salmon as well.

In my experience it doesn't realy matter what flavor you use, just as long as you use it all over everything. Start about 10 feet above the downrigger ball and grease it all the way down. Smear the lure, line and dodger up to 10 above where you clip it on. No human smell is what you're after. Some of the old guy's used to use WD40 but I think the fish have evolved to avoiding refined Pet. products. Use gloves to handle all your stuff when greasing it up. Keep a bag handy for those gloves. Never use any soap on your hands on the boat. Just wipe down with a rag. Salmon will run from any soapy smells.

The actually smelly jelly brand craw scent I havnt used. But I have some of the Mikes brand craw scent. I use for bass, catfish and while fishing for big trout at lakes which contain crawdads. I really havnt had any luck on it. I always find my way back to shrimp or krill, when going for trout and catfish. With bass it seems like most the time they hit out pure anger so scent isnt really needed. But regardless what ever I am fishing for I always rub sent all over my hands. I dont like to use oil, because your hands will be oily all day, but take some powerbait or grease and rub it on your hands to start off, after smoking, eating, putting on lotion/bug spray or handling gas

That's it man! We're hunting just as much as the guy dressed in camo and drenched in doe urine. They all have a keen sence of smell and they use it.
