Major screw-up at my end. A comment was posted to my Baker Lake report dated 7/19/12. The comment indicated that a fish that I had caught may have been a state record. I know too late, but I finally got around to verifying the record and looking at the application process. I messed up! When weighed on my fishing buddies’ digital scale, my fish weighed 11.7 pounds and the state record is 10.63 pounds. Lesson learned at my end…

Caught A Record?

• Have you caught a fish that you think might surpass a current state record?

• Do you know what to do next?

• Steps To Take

1. The most important step is to get the fish weighed as soon as possible on a certified scale.

2. Obtain the signatures of the scale operator and one other witness to the weighing.

3. Next, take the fish to a Department of Fish and Wildlife office for verification.

4. Click here to download an application package.
The application includes a map and list of area and district biologists who can complete verification (Part C). You can also pick an application package up in person from a WDFW regional office near you.

Wow ! that really sucks dude ! When your eating that fish, make sure to enjoy it ! Lol, nice fish though !

One bright note is if the fish are running larger this year there's a chance to catch another big one.

Back in the 90's when the saltwater chum record was 14 lbs I caught 5 over 20 lbs my first year. Didn't even know about the record.

Well, for your personal satisfaction. Weigh something on your buddies scale that has a documented, predetermined weight. To compare accuracy of the scale. Like, what is the actual weight of a 12lb lead downrigger ball on a certified scale and that Dr ball on your buddies scale? Or I suppose, add one other digital scale to the equation. And compare results between the two digital scales. I would think starting with a certified scale, then compare that weight on the buddies digital would be the way to go, for piece of mind.

That is a big fish. We caught a large fish out of Lake Wa in 2006. But it was at the 10lb mark. Never thought about a state record. Seemed to small for that.

The second link gets me another link to a page full of websites discussing various fish caught but no direct link to Wa record fish.

The 2nd link shows the Yahoo search results that I did, as per the title of that page: 'Washington State fish records'

The 1st link now shows: 'Service Unavailable', but it was the 2nd link in the list, and that selection isn't working now either, nothing I can do about that. And I get no firewall warning. The link was a list of all the fish records of Washington state--ALL the fish, fresh water and salt water of the state.

if it makes you feel any better RSEAS i once caught a dogfish that would have been a state record.... HHAHAHAHA what am embarrassing record that would be... Baker sure does have big sockeye tho huh? I got a 9.7 pounder a few days ago, compared to the brewster sockeye that average 2.5 pounds id rather have 3 baker fish than 6 brewster fish anyday!

Freak, do the brewster fish put up much of a fight considering there size. Caus I thought the Baker fish kick arse in that department.

Why stop at 6 fish? Don't forget the 6 Kings and 10 triploids for a 22 fish limit.

very true! im plannin on headin over for the fishery when fall nooks show up. great brewster vid by the way Big D!

Im sure that most of us have caught record fish of something.Whether it was largest Hake,Ratfish,Dogfish Salmon etc.... Big deal. I eat my catches. Unless I c&r the fish. I dont chase records. I chase a good meal. LOL. Sorry that it happened but look at the nice tastey dinner you had.

Nice looking record fish Rseas. At least you have the personal satisfaction of knowing you caught the state record fish. Id frame a picture of that fish if that was me.

First time I have seen this. Sorry friend, I would have commented earlier. Congrats on that fish. Personally, I don't think it sucks at all. You have the record in my book. And we all know it. It is just not on paper. So what, your still a great angler. Did you send that pic and info into magazines and online sites?
Congrats again on such a nice fish. At least you know you caught the state record.

sounds like last year at the edmonds coho derby, we just happened to go fishing that day and tried to buy a ticket at the launch but they were sold out.. winning fish was i think 14 that year, ours was 16... a boat and some cash sure would have been nice.

happened twice to my dad with a 10lb pink in the 80's and a 25lb chum in the 90's. an old coworker of his had a beardslie rainbow that was 2lbs above the record but some guy at the ramp told him the record was bigger then it really was so the fish got filleted. not sure if you can still keep them.
