links menu within threads for easier navigation.
links menu within threads for easier navigation.
Suggestion:
I run a similar phpBB "private" forum and took the topheader.html and footer.html files and placed the easy links in them.
this way you can navigate straight back to active topics and new posts with out going back and back etc.. makes mobile browsing way easier and just overall navigation better
these links can easily be implemented in those html files to make navigation from any thread, page, topic..
View unanswered posts • View unread posts • View new posts • View active topics
example: at the bottom of the page where the "Powered by phpBB® Forum Software © phpBB Group" is. you can place the links right above that and be able to navigate from any page!
and at the top where the washingtonlakes logo is, you can also place links.. these pages are static so they never change..
know what i'm saying, forum admin person?
let me know if i can assist.. i believe its top_header.html and footer.html files.. or something similar..

Re: links menu within threads for easier navigation.
I've got a huge update coming... damn near a whole site overhaul. The site menu will be back on top in the header with a Forum menu option with links to all of the often used forum items. I've got a few things left to do and I'll get it deployed. Shouldn't be more than a day or so away, quite possibly tonight if I can manage it.
Re: links menu within threads for easier navigation.
ahhh, nice! the links menu was a super fast edit i did for my forums.. so thought it to be a easy suggestion ;)
I first joined here some years ago and quickly fell off because the forum was just not fun and easy to navigate and post, etc.. i love these phpBB setups. thus, i love this forum!
keep up the good work!

Re: links menu within threads for easier navigation.
Don't need all that, it's already there.
here just above the list of forums;
http://washingtonlakes.com/forum/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What is best is to just have short cuts to each page you go to all the time and then just click on 'new posts' and if I want 'fishing reports' I just click on that shortcut. Works GREAT, no going back and forth to different pages to find the 'menu links' and back again and again.

Amx, i don't think you get what i'm saying.
this [image below] is one of my phpBB forums.. the red circles the shortcut links to new, active, etc that i placed in the header and footer html... by placing links in the footer and header which are static pages, these links show up no matter what dynamic page you are on.. EASY Navigation for mobile and internerding. no work by the users bookmarking etc.. just a easy add/edit and only a suggestion.. i find it hard to use this forum on my phone because i have to go back all the time just to view the new posts that i am most interested in.. and face it.. i'll bet 40% or more of the "after work" viewing comes from mobile users.. like me..

I get what you mean, have the links on every page, top and bottom, not just the page listing all the forums. Can be good, but I very seldon go anywhere other than the 'new posts/active topics'. I'll check the 'fishing reports' a couple/few times a day, and it's not a problem to open another browser by clicking on the desktop shotcut. :-)

haha, not to sound like a jerk..Amx wrote:I get what you mean, have the links on every page, top and bottom, not just the page listing all the forums. its not to make it easier for YOU, and you can still do it the way you do it.
and as you state "but I very seldon go anywhere other than the 'new posts/active topics'" <-- after you post to a topic or read a thread.. u right now have to click "board index" and then click "new or active" to get to what you like to go to or your bookmarks.. this update alliviates the extra steps.. go straight to new posts from ANY PAGE! and stay clicking within the forum.. now doesn't that sound awesome?
again, just a suggestion.. i have to much free time right now at my day job..
where's the NERD guy emocon?
Re: links menu within threads for easier navigation.
Nope, I post a reply, then just click 'back' a couple/three times, and get back to where I started, which is where my shortcut opens to. The 'new posts' page.
which is here;
http://washingtonlakes.com/forum/search ... d=newposts" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

hahaa, and exactly my point!
why click back back back
(or the other way) ... when u can click "new posts" once, from ANY PAGE.. users on there phones would be stoked..

why click back back back
Re: links menu within threads for easier navigation.
Because clicking back to the beginning is easy, and you don't have to worry where the next page will be, or what it was. You'll be at the beginning. Easier to click back 3 times, then scroll up or down to find and click on a link. The curser is already moved up to the back button while waiting for the reply to load and the page to change. Not so with clicking on a link, you have to wait for the page/reply to load, then scroll, etc. Works great.

I'm sure Aaron has this well in hand. I've seen what he's working on, it's going to be a nice update.
