When is roe too ripe to cure?

Post by soundkite » Sun Nov 17, 2013 4:43 pm

When is some roe too ripe to cure (ie- loose eggs in belly)? Also, can roe be too ripe for steelies, but still good for other salmon? Thanks for any guidelines!

If the skeins are loose , you always have the option of using them in a roe sac....

If they are loose the fish is probably no good anyways and you probably should have just let it go. Next time let the crappy ones go spawn, and keep a bright one if any are available. If not, eat a steak and use sandshrimp for bait.

Or cure the loose ones as single trout eggs for tipping wedding rings in lakes. I find them to be the best for this purpose. 1 fish worth of loose over developed eggs will last multiple seasons, if you use 1 egg at a time. It will save a lot of money on night crawlers, and IMO works better than tipping it with crawlers.

Agreed! But I'm surely not the only one who has fatally hooked a fish and decided to keep it. Also, often other anglers around me will just toss their eggs.

Have never cured eggs. Let alone single ones. How are single eggs removed from a salt caught Coho skein? Then, how are the eggs cured so they are firm enough to place on a hook? I thought cured eggs firmed up. But not equivalent to a Pautzke fire ball.

Me too! It was a dead day at work. Spent a lot of time watching and reading about different cures and methods.

I came across another video, Pautzke pro staff vid. Guide back east used a mess screen to separate single eggs from the skeins. I like the plastic spoon idea shown in your link, a lot!

I still have no Idea if single eggs can be cured firm enough to pierce a hook. When using the same recipe as when doing egg clusters for salmon and steelhead.

Add a bit more sugar and maybe some jello, they firm up just nice and you can always borax them for a day and they'll get real firm. I used to fish single eggs from my boraxed stash, they were real hard and never came off. About 3, 4 minutes in the water and they soften right up.

I cure skeins then shake the skeins loose ones will fall I use the intact skein for rivers and the fallen remainder I bottle for spring time. They are super soft, but they still work. And will save a lot money when tipping lures on lakes . They work especially good on flies because the juices get into the hair fur and it's ok if they smash up.
