Years ago in the old Fishing Holes magazine (circa 1975) there was an article on the most effective method to catch trout. It involved a 4/0 trout dodger, a short green carey special and a piece of worm. The green carey special is only tied on half the hook leaving the back half for the worm piece.
I might mention this article was pre-smelly jelly as the worm was needed for scent.
We had a chance to use it two days last week and it works good for seep lake trout. The dodger choice was size 4/0 in 50/50 color. I had hoped to keep the leader short in the under 16 inch range but every time I tied it came out to 24 inches. We checked and at 0.9 mph the small dodger still moves the fly.
One trout even broke a 11 lb leader but I think it may have been a sharp edge on the dodger lower snap. Biggest we landed was a chunky 17 1/2". The one that broke off was able to take out more line than the biggest that was landed.
Good luck if you ever try "retro".

The 0000 dodger chrome is my favorite trout catcher, has been for almost 20 years. Works better in E WA for me than W WA, not sure why that is.

Re: old fishing method re-visited
so far we've been out twice fishing with this method. Trout are something to see. We're up to being broke off 3 times now.

Mind me asking what retro lake you were dragging the retro gear? Switching from Pop gear to that dodger, many years ago, was a goooooood idea. Does not pull nearly as hard as the line twisting, do you have a fish on? Gang troll!!. Hey, a thought. Does the sling blade do just as well as the dodger for trout? I am going to try it!!!!

There's nothing special about the lake I'm fishing. Any lake with a little depth to it will give similar results.
I don't believe sling blades come in a 50/50 color. We also tried chrome dodgers and brass dodgers. The brass dodgers workes just about as good as the 50/50 but chrome was a very distant 3rd.
