Lake Chelan Outing

Post by eat-sleep-fish » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:34 am

Good day all!

I am making a trip to Chelan in an attempt to catch som Lake Trout. I have researched as many variables as I can but still have a couple questions, if anyone can assist. When using the Ace-Hi fly, do you put a flasher or dodger in front or just pull the fly? Same question for Brad's cutplug? My father and daughter plus her friend will be making the journey with me and i would like to put them on some fish so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Hoping for some accidental rainbows and/or kings, but not banking on it. Difficult to concentrate at work this week with fish dancing in my head!

Here's Dave's March movie.
There's a section on fishing Lake Chelan for Mac's and I don't see any flashers or Dodgers being used.

It's a really common practice especially in the upper midwest & Canadia to pull big dodgers for deep water lakers/Maks. If you are locating fish on the finder and trolling in depths where there is going to be little visible light I would not hesitate to throw on a UV dodger/flasher etc.

Most folks who I know that fish the Hi Fly do not use a flasher/dodger. This is how I rig mine. Start with 20lb or so of leader. I like P-Line fluroclear. Tie a #2 Treble on the end. 1/2 inch above eye of treble, tie a 3/0 or 4/0 single octpus hook. Next string 2-4 4mm or 5mm beads to eye of single hook. Slip on the hi fly. Some use the standard Hi fly, others use the needlefish, both will work. The flash from the hi fly should be flush with the end of the treble. Use beads to adjust this. Then add 3, 4mm or 5mm beads and a 1.5 glo/gold tiger smile blade by macks lures. Tie a chain swivel at the end and connect to your braid with the snap swivel. Leader length should be 42-48 inches. You will pick up more fish if you bait the single hook. If you have any pike minnow or get some herring, brine, cut into small pieces and add some scent. When trolling, go SLOW 1.2-1.4mph. Look for water 180-230 feet deep. If you are not picking up fish, you are probably trolling to fast. Couple other good resources: Look at old reports of WA Lakes in March or 2011-12 to see where people are getting fish. The guides, Joe Heinlen (Lake Chelan Adventures), Jerrob Biggar (Biggar Adventure Fising) and Anton Jones (Darrell and Dads Family Guide Service) all fish Chelan on a regular basis and post good reports. Also, check the article by Anton Jones about fishing Makinaw on Chelan. Hope this helps and good luck!!
