i was wondering what you guys's favorite colors of flat-fish/kwik-fish for trolling are. i tried a orange/ black spots f5 the other day with no success. before i go buy more i wanted to get your opinions.

Rainbow trout, Coachdog, Pink, Flourescent red with black dots...

My favorites are pure orange, rainbow, or pure silver.

p.s - They also work good for bass as well.

The rainbow trout are my favorite. There are some diffrent colors of rainbow trout though. I have 3 diffrent types and they all work great

My personal favorite is metallic silver with blue scales, but I have seen all of the colors mentioned above take fish.

frog colored, lots of nice bows and cutts off of it in a f4 size.

f7 chrome, f7 frog, hot pink/white kokanee killer (e-chip) and tomorrow I'm really gonna give a go with the rainbow pattern trout killer (e-chip) and frog pattern e-chip a go as the rainbow has yet to produce and the frog e-chip has yet to leave the package. Not to hi-jack, but hopefully add good info here, how's everyone riggin up their flatfish out there? Any weight a few feet up? Pop gear or flasher? Scent/powerbait/worm???? I know that last time I was trolling, nothing was doing crap, that was until the wind picked up real good and I had to use speed three and four to maintain trajectory, and BLAMMO, got nailed, then another, then...nuttin. Some days they want it sloooowwww, others you can't seem to go fast enough, with there was a way other than trial and error to figure out what speed to use one what days...input?

I like the hot red ones. They used to be one of the "go to" lures for early season trout trolling in the seep lakes. We had three different lures we'd use for the trout. If one didn't work we'd switch to the other, a flatfish, a thin bladed spoon and either silver or gold "spinner".

The red one works best for me. Put a siwash hook on it to better your hookup ratio...They also won't spit it as easy as those crappy little trebles they stick on em...Tip it with a worm and your set....

Gold or Silver with black spots on bright days.
Black with orange spots early or late in the day, or cloudy days.
Orange with black spots in late summer and fall.
Frog during some years, not on others.
Perch color in lakes that have perch.
Other colors may work at any time, you just need to try them out.

I have never caught anything huge on them but they really get the job done. I couldnt find anything that was just as, if not more productive than a wedding ring. But this is the one. I hate having to reel in after every bite to check the worm, not with these though.

But the bad stuff about them is: you have to troll very slow, so slow that is someone is using a spinner in the same boat there blade wont spin. They are WAY more expensive than a wedding ring, they are still pretty cheap but compared to a coupkle beads and a blade they are pricey. Line twists get pretty bad with these too.

Yep I catch bigger trout with them. And more then any spinner or spoon. That's what I've found at least. I find that the really bright colored flatfish also produce reaction strikes (aka they piss off trout into hitting them) and that leads to getting strikes when the bite isn't on....

I agree 100% A buddy and I were out a couple years ago for the early opener at Quincy, bank fishers stacked like cord wood around the lake. We were trolling chrome f4's and literally catching a fish with in a minute of letting out the line. What a blast turning them loose and watching the bankies lose it as they weren't catching anything because tha water was still a bit cold. As the day progressed we switched to whipping fly's and anything sitting on the surface was fair game. If the poor suckers would have just cast the PB with no weight they would have had a limit in no time. Small stockers C&R only. I think a lot of lakes should be stocked then closed to fishing for a year in a kind of a rotation stocking to let them grow a little and get good to eat. Trout should not be the other white meat.

K4 (or F4) will usually catch the smaller fish, but can catch the bigger ones.

K7 (or F7) can catch the smaller fish, but often starts to catch the larger ones.

The really big versions are usually trolled for Lake Trout, Salmon, etc.

I don't know that I agree with the "one year" concept, but I would like to see the seasonal lakes stocked at least 6 weeks before the season opens. But........................................

The reason the F & W stocks just before the opener is to give the joes a place to catch easy fish on the opening day. Now you know why I like to start the season on non-seasonal waters.

I just think it would slow the put and take.
1. The fish would have a year to grow before they're ravaged.
2. Some of those fish would become very wary of any action and growing even bigger.
3. It would get rid of a lot of "meat" fisherpersons. I've seen them on the side of the lake with 1/2 doz kids running amuk not fishing or anywhere near in control of their rods, one dad fishing 7 rods. If you had to read and understand the regs a lot of that would be stopped.
