Buoy 10 report

Well we didn't make it out Sunday for the Hallie opening. Something about 6 foot seas with a 4 FOOT wind chop against the tide slopping spray in the boat made us think that going outside seemed like a bad idea.
Here she is, the "10 can":
Saturday was gorgeous, with 3 nice big fish in the boat. We did screw up pretty badly, mis-identifying these three as Chinook:
Kids, those are COHO.
This one went 31" and 16 lbs:
Sunday we figured out that the fish without spots are coho, and the fish with spots are the 'Nooks. The easiest identifying mark is the color of the gums where the teeth actually meet the soft tissue. White or black, its pretty evident.
Very chrome brights were coming out:
Total for the boat was 2 nooks, 10 coho for 3 guys in 3 days. I pulled 5 out when it was all said and done, so almost limited.
The Thumb was laying it down as well:
He may have been a smolt, but at least he was tough! Took a whack at the lure and stuck. Would you call this a jack?
Here is his thumbliness and a real fish:
Bad part of the story, I found out that due to the small amount of line I had on the reel, I wasn't where I thought I was. Turns out the 40 feet of line I thought I was running out was nowhere near that. We eventually figured out sunday morning that I was going out to a whopping 10 feet of depth, and hadn't gotten a single damn strike. Thought it was the yellow line, but once the depth situation was mitigated (and thanks to my particularly fantastic roll on the herring) my rod was the go-to pole the rest of the trip.
I can't recommend this place enough, its a blast. Just be ready to fish with 3000 other boats, and if you are going to go out to the mouth, have a BIG boat with a kicker, a radio, and a cell phone, because they call this place the Graveyard of the Pacific for a reason.
