Northwest Fishing Reports

I have witnessed during the 08 summer that jigging was the best. Green and White was the best choice as that had caught most of the big chinooks. I saw people using cut-plug herring under a bobber with no luck. I had heard though that it works for coho. Does anyone know any better techniques? I would love not to lose so many darts and buzzbombs. As for coho i dont know any good ways for them. some sugguestions would be nice thank you.

The Coho have been hit and miss down at the pier the last few years. In years of past you could go to the north end of the dock and drift herring and have good success. Buzz bombs worked for me at the pier for Coho but as you likely know you better be paying attention to the buzz bomb on the way down or your equipment becomes the property of the tires and/or sunstar at the bottom.

I've been fishing that pier for 20+ years. Coho fishing there isn't what it used to be because there are far fewer fish being imprinted in net pens by the sports clubs. The fish would return and would just go up and down the shoreline by the marina. The north end was where most herring floaters fished because they didn't have to deal with the dozens of buzz bombs flying at the south end. Best luck is always at first light, last light, and an hour either side of a tide change. I've caught a lot of fish and seen a lot of fish caught no deeper than 15'. These fish these days are just traveling thru. Mostly headed to hatcheries to the south. The fish are not on the bottom. Just keep the gear up in the water column and you'll catch more fish and lose less gear to the bottom junk.

It is usually better in the morning - first light. White early. Green works. I've been catching black mouth and silvers on Pink/white. Try and be there an hour before tide changes to an hour after for best luck... but even that rule doesn't hold much water at the pier.

I have to agree with Wolverine... Coho hasn't been what it use to be. Fewer imprint fish the last several years (under 15,000). If you recall the coho would arrive and then park it in the marina. Ever since the new wall on the north end was completed the number of coho seen inside the marina has shrunk. I'm wondering if the material used on the marina wall (being metal) has changed the "smell" or the vibrations off of the metal walls isn't the same as the rock and until we have first imprint returns since the new walls we won't see any improved numbers of returns? Thats my insane theory and I'm sticking with it for now.

If you recall the north end is where the schools ran through. You would just sit at that side and wait for the fish to explode in groups of 10 to 20 around the corner of the marina and hope like heck they would stop and take the bait. If you were really watching you could shoot a jig out in front of the coho and actually catch the darned things.

This year it was few and far in between. Last year they came in late and were dark and jaws were locked up.

Black mouth should be heating up soon as long as it isn't a repeat of 2007/2008 and we all screamed wheres the fish?

I have fished the Edmonds pier for a few years too. I haven't caught a whole lot but the ones I have caught were all quality Chinook. Smallest was about 18lbs and the largest was 29lbs!
I have only fished the pier during the summer months. Never thought of trying for Chinook during the Fall/Winter months. I'll have to get out there. Might as well do some squid fishin too.

i saw a guy on in the summer of 2006 and this guy caught a 32 pound KING Salmon!

also the salmon fishery has been picking up at the pier! some silvers and some shakers and some legal kings!
