Northwest Fishing Reports

Dear Fishing Community,

I work for the Snohomish County Marine Resource Program and am currently in the process of revising the management plan for the Picnic Point County park. The current plan lacks any reference to the recreational fishery potential of the park and I am hoping to remedy this. I ask anyone who has fished or even visited this park to provide pertinent information here. I am specifically interested in what you have observed both in the creek and off the beach and what you have caught. Also, impressions of the level of use this park sees by recreational anglers. Any observations will be extremely helpful in my work on this management plan. Thank you all for your help.

I had heard that the beach was a good spot to catch some Silvers, Pinks, and a friend of mine would go out to Picnic Point to catch Cutthroat on flies.

It would be hard to imagine that that stream would see much go up it with beach combers always clogging the thing with logs. Maybe a nice little foot bridge would benifit that area... nothing huge but something to make it a hair bit easier to get over the stream without having to toss driftwood over and clogged the thing up.

That's a very good point. A bridge is a priority for the park. We have documented fish getting up the stream, but this may be thanks to some concerned locals who clear the mouth of the stream in the dead of night.

Bro, I've fished PP for years. It's a pretty seasonal fishery but its a good spot to get out for an hour or so and do some casting. Next summer the park will be packed with fisherman as soon as it opens for salmon as its a pink salmon year (every other year). Next July the parking lot will be full every day with fishermen. Mostly fly fishermen but also a lot of guys chucking pink buzz bombs. Years ago I used to see coho salmon entering the creek at high tide. I haven't seen any for several years but they may still be coming in at the high tide after dark. Cutthroat trout do still go up the creek as I have seen some this year. Have never seen any chum salmon hanging around the mouth of the creek. The beach is a very good pink salmon fishery, so-so cutthroat C&R fishery, the occasional passing coho, and a few too small kings. The problem is all the floating seaweed lettuce that is there most of the time. It can be really tedious having to clean the hook after every retrieve.

Why wouldn't their be any Chum there? They were at the stream near Meadowdale park... not a lot of them but..

I have to agree that the park will be loaded when the Pinks come swimming in. I'll likely be one of them casting with lighter gear for a little bit at a time.

The only big problem these days are car break-ins.Something needs to be done about this.When I go fishing I take 2 complete setups incase you need it.I hate leaving anything visible in the cab of my truck.I've had my window broken twice at parks where I fish.I dont have too much taken cuz I dont put much in there.Its the hassell of it.I've not fished much at PP. But I do like clamming up there.

I just fished P.P on Sunday.. no sign of any fish. I did catch a game warden though. Only the second time I've ever been approached. I was pretty excited, I was doing everything right, LOL. I had removed my treble and was fishing with all single barbless, license check, etc.

go to their salt message board and inquire with these guys. Beaches like P.P. are heavily fished by the fly guys. These people would greatley appreciated anything that could be done to better their areas which they fish.
Thanks for your efforts in this. I can't offer a personal opinion on what to add at P.P. just because I've only been there twice, and Sunday I was there at straight up low tide. I have no idea how viable the creek is at high tide, so i guess the folks that already said some fish make it through are prob. correct.

Nope, thats just the beach at Mukilteo. There are some piers to the north of the ferry terminal and some beach access south of the terminal.
However, not a lot of pinks are taken in this area...Your best bet is to hit the shores of the Snohomish river down low in the system or another beach that has Pinks running in thicker numbers through it.

Its south of Mukilteo Park and north of Meadowdale/ and Norma Beach...

Not a ton of parking room but its easier to get to the beach than Meadowdale - unless you like parking near the old boat house and cross the railroad tracks or have the handicap parking ticket (I got one but feel guilty about it at times) Opps that reminds me I got to go renew mine

Thanks for all your input guys. I'm surprised that a F&W guy was down there. I guess they get a little bored this time of year.

One of are fav starting spots heading N to the wreck just leaving Browns bay we swing wide stay in the 125ft stuff to 90 feet and we watch you guys all the time working the puffer sticks from the beach:cheers: .
We kinda left a dent in them or 10 late for the bigger Coho with mojo and all I could say was to the beachers were sorry and a few sported the birdy:colors: While we sported the meat:compress:
Chipster Busted out the biggest Inland Coho I have seen in 25 years using the advanced bucket-head (Bonics) 101 course and it blew up his Lamai just as we netted the monster Buck hog!:compress:
