winter salmon fishing in rivers
what are the best ways to catch chums what a bout gear such as line and rods
RE:winter salmon fishing in rivers
Cerise jigs under floats fished just off the bottom works for em...
I used 12lb test and a 7' Medium action rod last time and it was a kick...
Hold off though, Chums are still a ways out right now, the story is silvers and pinks up high in the Skykomish...

Yep no problem with that, I was just letting you know that the Chums aren't in yet so no point in trying for em now...

Any standard salmon gear (corkies, spinners, float n jig) will catch them. Also depending on where you catch them could also influence the type of gear to use. What I mean by this is that someone fishing in Elliot Bay for them will most likely not be using gear that someone targetting them on the green river would use. Different tactics for different scenarios.
With that said, they one of the absolute best fish I have ever fought. They are brutish and strong and it would be like taking a smallies fight and amplifying it to the nth degree.
On the Green, I have had excellent success with a double lime green corky, pink yarn and shrimp smelly jelly. I use a Heavy action Lami Norwest Special 8'6" casting rod and 12# test.
Have you ever targetted them? One big boy spooled my Shimano Curado D while it was at full capacity last year after a 22 minute battle. :bom: I saluted him and tipped my hat. I lost fair and square.

I used the same setup last year for chums on the sky last year, except the rod. I had a 8'6" ML. Chums are really strong fish, pretty fun. I wish they tasted better.Sam Kafelafish wrote:Cerise jigs under floats fished just off the bottom works for em...

Yea I was probably underequipped. IF that guy decided to tear off downriver for the next hole or faster water I would have been dead. Luckily he just dogged out the fight in the same hole...

yea yaeh but i dont like have them monkey to get that stuff do u think that a 7 foot eagle claw pack rod with 10lb braided line will do
RE:winter salmon fishing in rivers
A pack rod might be tough. I used a 7' Medium Action rod with 12lb mono and that worked out ok.
