I'm building a new stick

Post by Lotech Joe » Thu Apr 09, 2009 3:12 am

I've taken the mid section and the tip section of an old 9 foot 3 piece bamboo rod and I'm using them to make a 6 foot banty rod. I stripped all the old finish off the sections and put 6 or 8 coats of Minwax, clear gloss Wipe-On polyurethane on them. I ordered a down locking, sliding band reel seat with a teak wood insert from Angler's Workshop and so far I'm liking what I see. Next, I need some black guides, hook keeper, winding check and a cigar shaped grip. What do you think?

Joe,

Tell me that you didn't hack up an expensive boo rod.... I have 3 boo rods but seldom fish them anymore as I'm so used to stiff fast action graphite rods that I find it extremely difficult to slow down enough to let the boo work.

wolverine,
Nope, it was a miss matched 3 piece with cracked ferrules. I don't think any of the 3 pieces were originally from the same rod. I couldn't use it, now maybe I can.

Joe, at first I almost screamed, but when the "rest of the story" came out, it all made since.

You will have a great little stream rod. Do you have some brookies you want to educate?:-"

That is the beginnings of a sweet looking project Joe. I wish I knew where to begin with something like that.
Keep up informed with photos as you go.

Brookies? Yes! A recently acquired 2nd Cousin In Law tells me he's going to show me were. I've been sitting next to him and his wife at church for a few months and come to find out that his wife is my mother's cousin. Go figure.

Just remember, keep your family close to you, but your family with fishing spots closer (LOL).

I have just found out about some Brookies myself, need to get some warm and dry conditions to check them out.:-"

Let us know how the rod works.

Nice little rod Joe.... I sure like the 8wt I just finished. I am now going to do a 7pc graphite travel 8' 3 wt to take along on trips. Hopefully I will be able to do a redo of a 5wt noname bammer I have had around for 30years. It is still sound and straight....Time to slowdown and enjoy the scenery.
You are going to like that little rod when you go out on those little streams.
Take care and keep us informed, Steve

Fly Fishing is the art of attaching a fake bug to a line and relying on the appropriate manipulation of the rod to deceive the fish into eating a sharp steel hook covered with feathers and fur.

It turned out to be a 6', 2 piece, 6 weight. Able to cast big streamers into tight holes after hefty fish. Also able to cast soft flies at 20' and lay them down soft. I'm ready to use this stick chasing brookies & rainbows in some of our smaller more heavily covered streams of eastern Washington. Here are some pics;

My rod building abilities aren't as good as they used to be, but I'm ready to fish this stick, and I'm sure I'll be happy with it.
