New Feature - Manage your own Fishing Report Comments

Post by Aaron » Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:49 am

Last night I implemented a new feature where Authors of fishing reports now have the power to manage their own report comments. On the right-hand side of comments will be a link to delete the comment. This gives report authors the ability to remove offensive comments on their own. My hope is that this will keep the comments in-line with our site policies and keep the report posters happy.

If another user comes along and rains on your parade... no sweat. Delete it! If someone gets on their soapbox on your report, delete it! It's up to you, it's your report.

Please continue to report abusive comments and/or users to us. Sometimes just deleting the comment isn't enough. If something is really offensive please leave the comment there and report it so that we have proof and can take appropriate measures.

=d> Very good! I have wanted to go back and correct errors, or add info to reports I've posted, but have been unable to. I'm happy to have the ability now. Thanks!

I think it gives the ability to delete someones comment on a report but does not allow us to edit the report we had submitted.

We haven't given the ability to edit the reports, just manage the comments. If the authors of the reports were able to edit them we would have to re-approve them and we just don't have the time for that. As well, we wouldn't want to put ourselves in a position where a vindictive user went and deleted all of his or her reports or attached inappropriate photos. Maybe someday. For now, you'll have to settle for the ability to be in charge of the comments and the direction of the conversation that takes place.

Why the difference in approval on the reports vs the forum?

Hmmmm... Good question. Forum posts can come and go. In fact, the forum itself could probably go altogether and the site would still be fine after a short healing period. The reports, however, are the bread and butter of the site. *Most* of the time we edit the reports for spelling, punctuation, grammar and layout. Not always, but most of the time I make sure the report is readable and makes sense. This process keeps the reports looking nice, and we're positive they'll always be that way because we're the only ones that can edit them. We don't want someone going back and removing a single thing or changing something because they've had a change of heart about divulging some piece of information. If they ask us, we'll change it. But we don't want it changed without us knowing. If we moved to a model where the report had to be re-approved after an edit it would probably add a lot of time to our upkeep, and it would considerably increase the amount of data we have to store. In order to do this we would have to keep a copy of the original report as well as the edited report in case, as sometimes happens in the forum, a user deletes everything and saves their report/post.

I can understand how nice it would be from a reporters point of view to have this ability, and I'm not saying that won't ever happen, but right now it's just not in the cards. The site has reached a point where MOST of my free time is being spent monitoring it. I'm not even sure what we're going to do in the future.. because the site is going to continue growing, probably by 25-35% per year.

Perhaps we'll have to take on some help in the form of community helpers, similar to the function the mods have for the forum. Some helpers that can read and approve reports, post articles, videos, audio and photos. We'll see what happens.

What he said.

My view on the reports is they are a unique historical document that we as a fishing community have created from over 10 years of fishing reports. With the enhancements Aaron created the past few years, the data from those reports can generate a lot of really cool stuff. Forum comments come and go, but reports are something truly irreplaceable.

I don't think this site would be half as nice without the forums:-"

I think what Aaron means is Forum content is fluid and ever changing, but those reports are once in a lifetime. The forum posts would eventually replenish themselves, but once a report is lost it's lost for good.
