Hook sharpener recommendation?

There are a few different hook sharpening devices out there. Should I just go with the most basic? Some seem to be more fancy..... but does it really matter or is there some option that I need?

I use 'The Point Maker'

Use to use 'Pointmatic's' 'HookHoner' in the boat, but it wore out.

In the boat now I just use the sharpening file. New hooks and new lures I sharpen at home with the Point Maker.

got this at walmart and in the camping isle they should have this sharpener that is good for knives and hooks

Forget that stuff, go with a small crosscut file and put a handle on it. It only takes a few strokes to sharpen even the dullest hook and you can use it to file down barbs that break when you pinch them down. The only drawback is that the file will rust, so it will need a little WD-40 now and then. I have a multitude of devices in my boat and the file gets the most action!

For what its worth, (and I know I will catch some flak for this) I have maybe sharpened 1 hook my whole life. I think that it is way overrated.

But Smith makes a real nice knife/hook sharpener for under $20. They sell them at Cabelas and I heard sportco. Its diamond sharpener, and is small enough to fit in your pocket

Go with a good flat crosscut file period!

use new hooks........ if the old ones are dull toss'em and put on good quality new ones. It's part of keeping up your gear. As far as big fish go, after you catch a fish with any lure, it comes off the line and back into the box untill it's inspected, cleaned and ready for the next one. too many studies have shown lures handled by humans and after catching a fish scare the others off with our sent and the fishes fear phermones (sp). Just the smell of a coulpe drops of human urine or a lure that's been handled a lot can send every salmon or stealhead down river up to a mile. You guy's can rub your hands all over the hooks sharpening them, not me.
