Power pro braided question

Post by The Quadfather » Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:41 am

I switched out to PP braided awhile back. Since then I've used both the 20lb and 30lb. It's on two different spinning reels that I fish both fresh and salt water with. I will say that the stuff casts GREAT!! I just plain like the way it flows and I don't think that it tangles as easy either.

But my point is that I have had at least 2x now where I have been gently pulling line off the spool, by hand... because maybe I saw a loop sticking up from within the spooled line. As I was pulling of the line I have found twice where it is just broken, or maybe broke right as I was taking it off. I was kind of shocked! I mean it's braided line, I can barely cut it with nail clippers. I always rinse my reel after the salt, etc.

Anybody else see this stuff break without reason? 30 bucks a pop is a bit much.

Quad,
I use power pro braid and have not run across anything like that. I love power pro. But if I run across that situation knowing it happened to you. I will be quick to throw it away, until then I will continue to use it. Not sure as to why that has happened to you though. Have you checked your guides on the rod? Maybe you have a crack in a guide or something?

That is a good point, I will take a look. Just for clarification, I am talking about a break off that is like 50 yards into your spool. Now i've got to decide what to go spool up for today. Uhg!

Haven't had any problems with braid as of yet. However, I only have Power Pro on one level wind reel as I mostly use Tuff Line and Berkley Fireline. I can't imagine a braided line just breaking, it has to have been sheared in some way. The only other possibility I can think of is excessive line twist, you may want to de-twist your line from time to time. I get it on occasion when trolling and a swivel gets gooped up with vegetation.

I don't follow this forum to much, so if you do find out what it is please PM me.

Personally I have used PP and several other brands on spinning reals and level winds for years and have never ever had that happen.

I suspect that one of several things is happening:
1) Bad batch of line if it is only from one batch.
2) Equipment failure in your real or rod.
3) You have some quirk or habbit that is causing a sudden stop. Braided line has almost no streatch so it can break on a sudden impact.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
