I've researched this and there are solutions that have this capacity. I also want to add remote start from my phone and text notification of alarm activation... trying to justify the costs on a 5-year old vehicle. There's the thieves costing us more money again!Rich McVey wrote:Just a thought... I have Sentry software for my PC. It senses movement and records audio and video. Also picking up a home security system.
I wonder how hard it would be to install a compact embedded controller and some cameras in the truck. If a break in does occur, then at least you have evidence for the police.
Any thoughts?

I am sure the cities and counties don't have the staff or funding. Sheesh, WSP just shut down their auto theft task force in Spokane.ResQ wrote:Why doesnt PD do a sting when they get a few breakin reports? Just set up a dummy car and then nab the idiots. However, how about a washingtonlakes.com sting? :-)

If there is a problem area, I don't go there. I am out to fish and have fun, not to orchestrate a sting operation. To sit in my boat and wonder if my belonging are going to be stolen takes up too much energy and I'd rather think about something other than being ripped off.

I totally agree Marc. Thats why were thinkin about it while were sittin in front of our computers. :cyclopsan
I dont think I have ever launched from a problem location. I live in an "I dont trust you until you earned it" world. Its normal for me to contemplate this stuff. Im also an electronics tech so ideas of the security/camers systems are interesting to me. You should see all the stuff I tinker with at home.

I was just looking at a game camera. Its motion activated and does video or pics. Its a small camouflage unit that could be placed on a tree or fence next to your rig. It was in a flyer from cabellas or something last week for $100

A. Actually, the "sting" comment was a joke (hence the smiley face).Marc Martyn wrote:If there is a problem area, I don't go there. B. Your car can get broken into anywhere. I would like to worry about other things too, but now that it's happened to me, I have to take that into condsideration. I figured Beaver Lake was safe - all parking is visible from the water and it's between homes.
RE:Vehicle break-ins at boat launch
Rac that would be cool. I don`t see anything wrong with carrying as long as it`s used when needed. That would be very few cases. Look at Alaska granted it is more remote but everyone packs. My wifes grandmother lives in Holmer she`s 92 and carries. Scary huh. I thinks it`s more of who grew up around them. I`ve been hunting since I was 5. Guns have always been apart of my life. Living in the swamps and bayou you had to carry or get bit my cotton mouths and gators. The people who issue the license need to use more common sense in my opinion. But then someone would have a law suit for discrimination. But that`s awhole other issue.

I take a; not going to miss... 12 ga with #4 buck no plug 5 rounds as fast as I can pull the trigger. I will even shoot the truck if I need to. I have no pitty for any kind of crime! Some just may have some rock salt packed. When someone is at the ramp I make sure they see the gun go into the boat.

RE:Vehicle break-ins at boat launch
I am sorry to hear about your break in. I think you did just about everything I and most of us would have done. I have one added thing I do of the things on your list and that as I am walking away from the vehicle I will find a hiding spot and wait up to 15-20 minutes to see if anything happens. I sacrifice fishing time, but I think it's worth it. I figure if they're going to bust in, they'll likely do it in that time frame.
However, I suppose hiding in wait would be tough if you're fishing from the boat, as I am a shore bound angler.
Keeping things of value out of sight is always a good thing, but sadly it is not a 100% deterrent (although I think it does help). I have had things broken into without the added motivation of things of value in sight.

RE:Vehicle break-ins at boat launch
I have had windows broken multiple times with nothing to steal. I've had stuff stolen when there's
nothing in sight. I have learned to not have anything of value in my truck. I leave doors "unlocked"
and windows cracked open! These losers will get in anyway- locked, alarm, or within site. Just let them
in, less damage. It only takes about 15 seconds to go through your truck, about 30 if they take a bunch
of stuff. Hard to catch these guys.
Someone tried to steal my trailer at the launch, so now I try to back in trailer in a spot it
can't be taken around my truck- when I can.
I always tell everyone at a problem area or lake that there is a problem so everyone will look out
for each other.

OK OK I must chime in on this Thread lol
1. Sorry this may offend some but if you shoot someone for breaking into your vehicle your a Donkey!
2. hopefully you have insurance. to cover the personal belongings in the vehicle IE renters or home owners most auto policies will not cover personal Items. but check with your insurance company I only know my company's policy as I work for them..
3. Written test for a cpl or to own a gun... why complicate things if your an adult Teach yourself why should you have to be baby sat to own a firearm... and like a previous posted put soon we will need to be taught to cross a street something to that effect. Grown folks read your own laws and undersatnd them no need for a test so lets see Wa state can charge you for it! and provide the anti gunnies ammo for more gun control? Naw I will pass. I bet my sone and daughter Know more about safety then most grown folks and they never been to a class or took a tesst on firearm safety. I taught them and they also read for themselves. just like I was taught rifle safety and shooting in the military nothing about pistols I taught myself didn't need a class for it, nor a test.
4. to catch a someone stealing your stuff only thing I would reccommend is whoop there backsides or get all the info you can from them IE car make model color lic plates discription I see most take photos out here on the water take a photo of all the cars in the area. I go to fish all the time I look at all the cars in the area and remember the plates being I would with cars everyday i know all models just about. lics I remember most of the plate. And a good discription of the people around most of the theives will not be in fishing attire thats for one I seen folks staight out punk rock gear long hair hand no reason to be around rieter hanging out listening to music I just remembered the car and also the lics plates and remembered what each one looked like and fished away. if they broke a window I was less that 100 yards away I would of heard it and went up the hill. to see what they were doing and called the police let them do thier job. but for me to pull a gun on them naw not worth the time in prison for them not being a threat on my life or anyone close ( and that could be a stanger or family member) to me life. I OC to all the lakes and places I go because I can not because I am fearing for my life. or worried about someone breaking in my car. thats what I pay insurance for also I do nto have a ded. on my comp side only my collision so I will never be out of pocket if someone breaks in my vehicle.

and btw way most Alarms are garbage unless they are installed correctly and well hidden. as a thieve can disable it in less than 10 seconds of being in a vehicle. it is as simple as breaking a window opening a hood and cutting the horn wires boom nothing but flashing lights lol pointless IMO. I always ran my horn to bounce off the ground and place it low and out of site there for it will take more time to disable it and they may just have to go inside under the dash to find the control module. which I hide that really well and bolt it down. but the light will help an un experienced knucklehead. that you want real visable.

RE:Vehicle break-ins at boat launch
unfortunately Marc, the areas on the east side of the state that are actually safe are getting less and less. This morning at the public launch in Bellingham, 7:15am, we had a car drive up with a man and woman asking us if we wanted to buy earings.Marc Martyn wrote:If there is a problem area, I don't go there. Wanna bet that that made me just a bit anxious as we left the dock?

Even if they (Police) catch the lil freak breaking in vehicles, most likely he'll or she'll be out on the streets in 2 days cuz some hot shot lawyer trying to make a quick buck will have them out on bail in a flash. Or you might get some tree huggin judge that lets the poor soul go. I see it in court documents all the time.If youre a youth in Wa. State then there will be lil to no punishment. That is the saddest. Like I said like others said, if its a bad place I dont fish there.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

RE:Vehicle break-ins at boat launch
Thanks for the feedback/suggestion. I like the idea and would do that if I saw something. However, they are probably seeing me at that point, so I like the concept. At Beaver, it would be as simple as trolling a few feet because you have to walk near the edge to see around the fences surrounding the launch.islandbass wrote:I am sorry to hear about your break in.
