New boat colours

Post by sickbayer » Mon Nov 12, 2012 6:54 pm

Well guys i am thinking about buying a new boat from willie boats  their raptor model and im having a hard time deciding on a colour for it. As some of you know my thunder jet is fire engine red so that colour doesnt appeal on my new boat.
Those who have an aluminum boat know keeping it clean and polished is tough :-({|= , so i will be going 3/4 paint with no metal left unpainted.
So I am looking for any ideas on colour combinations...looking forward to hearing some ideas.
Oh and my TJ is for sale pm me if interested.

Perhaps a color that matches your tow vehicle. Are you going with an I/O or an outboard model?

I will be getting an inboard jet with not sure on the pump size yet. Also be fixed frame. My dodge can't pull a shopping cart so a new truck will be next winter. So I don't have a colour to match tow rig. I will say my favorite colour was kawsakis granite blue also like gun metal grey i guess that could be a good combo.

Gotta decide if you want dark or light: hi vis noticible on water for safety or dark and mean. Raw aluminum sux to polish and clear coated hulls yellow over time depending on your storage and cleaning practices. Some colors go well with other colors. Like a red boat and black truck looks great while a red boat looks like hell behind a teal green truck ](*,) If you like the dark colors have them layed out so that you can have a wrap thrown on there to break it up or match the tow rig. My cents would be either Dark blue metalic or black.. Or both [thumbsup]

My dodge is black and was very sexy the day I bought it, by day two was dirty and has never looked the same since. I am thinking of bright colour. And yeah the teal green truck comment is funny as that is what the wife's truck colour is that I use to pull the TJ currently.

Yellow. [biggrin]

A person had a yellow one for sale last winter or some such time, and it looked good. The ad should still be there.

Blue/grey combo, sounds like the making of a nice civil war theme. I take it that you'll be moving your kicker, along with HAL, to your new boat. I really didn't care to have the hydraulic lines running over the transom so I put together a couple of bulkhead fittings that have worked out very well. When I want to remove the acutator, I simply install a short "jumper' between the two external fittings to maintain the system's integrity. You might give it a thought for the new tub.

Nice work there Gman, yeah I'd have to run the hydraulic lines through the bulk head. How did you do the throttle actuator lines ? Could you explain the short jumper you are talking about?

I ran the throttle actuator and tach lines with the fuel line through a rubber gromet. The jumper is just a short piece of tubing, around 6" long that takes the place of the acutator and hose assembly. You'll also need this jumper in place to bleed the system when you do the installation. You can use a 1/4" splice connector to join the actuator hoses together once you remove them from the bulkhead fittings. Once done, the boat side system is sealed and the the acuator and it's hoses are a separate closed loop as well.

I planned on using quick disconnect on cylinder and splicing throttle actuator cables to waterproof fittings.

Polishing does indeed suck, but SharkHide, not a clear coat, does not yellow. My boat still looks like it did when I pulled it home 3yrs ago. Simple upkeep, just wash it, and a 20 minute reapplication once a year (for me) has kept it looking new. Every time we launch, we get the same question, "New boat?" and I just smile when I say no. Unless I was looking at an open sled for a bunch of people to beat the crap out of with a don't care attitude," it's a work boat", I'd look at just about any other before a Willie. Sure they make that sundeck for the back, but any builder can, it's about as simple as it comes. The bottom line is fit and finish, Willies just don't have it. Your TJ is head and shoulders above the Willie as a finished boat. Wooldridge even has a better finish. I have to say Wooldridge has upped their game in the last couple years. Every joint and weld on the boat will dictate how it's kept up after the first season, if it's rough, you're not going to enjoy maintaining it. Willie boats are riding on the reputation of Oregon guides that beat the crap out of their boats on boney Oregon rivers and then off them after a couple seasons. Design and mechanically they get an A, fit and finish a D at best. Just my opinion, that’s all. The other thing you need to find out is how many inboards they make a year, not sportjets, not outboards, inboards. Then compare that with the other boys on the list. We need to take a long look at the show again, you know they put the best example of their work at the show so it will best all the others coming off the line. Some neat ideas, with shiney diamond plate to distract, they just look stuck together.

And you forgot, you park it in a heated shop, out of the sun which is 98% of maintaining it. Sharkhide does yellow, UV does a job on it and I’ve seen it on too many boats. If you're in populated area, get ready to do a solvent wash every few years before it's re-application. I asked many dealers, owners and maintainers and looked at, at least 100 boats. Folks that kept their boats indoors, pretty sold on it, those that left them outside, not so much and docked, not at all. The maintainers said it was a steady income stream and a toss up for polishing. I hit about every boat yard in the greater Portland area looking at boats and if you can baby the boat and the sharkhide, it's great. If not, get ready for the super fund site cleaning up after it. It's not for me but there are a lot of folks that like it.

It would still be on my boat if it sat outside. I've used it for 3yrs and anything that keeps the deicers from attacking the aluminum like Sharkhide does is a plus in my book. You do not need to strip it to reapply, I don't, then again, I follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and maintenance and have personally talked with Sharkhide owner Clint Bland about the product and its use. He pecifically states it will not ever turn yellow or discolor due to sunlight. It's clear you're not a fan, I am. [cool]

Yep Like I said there are those that do and those that don't. All depends on where you want to spend your energy. A quick trip around the Portland area, more Al boats than I've seen anywhere. Lots to choose from in various states of Sharkhide decomp. The boats being docked instead of trailered showed the worst. Ask a bunch of of the Pontoon set guys if Sharkhide is suseptable to UV and you'd get quite a different answer, more along the lines of, " I have to strip and redo it every year". I must say though, if I lived in the land of De-Icer It would make a very strong case for it. The stuff is just fierce on aluminum. As it is I just make a quick stop at the quicky car wash and blast off the boat before it gets put away, Saltaway is also a real saver.
