Snohomish River

Well I was doing ok on the Snohomish for Silvers about three weeks ago. I got a 4,8 and 10 pounder. Now it is just a death zone for spawned out pinks. I was thinking I could bottle that scent and call it "Love on the River".LOL Was that it for the silvers or will there be another run? I heard there a lot still in the salt from more than one source. Anyone with info please post up. Even our noble chief editor did not so good from the report I see he posted today. I started out today(bank fishing) at Thomas's Eddy and ended up by the Reformatory in Monroe(Skykomish) and we got nodda. I think I might have seen about five small silvers roll all day. Shoud I try another river? Don't want to the Snoho is closet to my home. Need input please help I want at least one more silver preferbly more than one before winter. Also is it possible for a chum salmon to be in the Sky yet? I saw a rather large fish moving down stream at a rapid pace by leaping in the air and I am postive I saw those stripes down it's side. It looked like the pic SamKalefish posted.

I've seen plenty of good silver reports on other forums over the last few days for the Snohomish river. I'm presuming they are still in there but you just gotta find them. Keep moving upriver up near Lewis Street or up as far as the Sultan/Sky, I've heard of reports from there too which have put out fish....

Chums could be in there now. I don't know if they'd be that dark yet, but who knows...

I have been invited by a friend at work to fish on the Snohomish with him on Sunday so just trying to gather a bit of information before we head out. He has never fished it...I certainly haven't fished it, so if there are any tips on a spot with decent bank access I would appreciate it. Been reading some of the reports and seems a little touch and go right now. I see several references to Thomas Eddy...is this the local hot spot on this river?

Not sure the exact tackle I want to use...probably will just toss around some dick nites and jigs.

If there's anything you can think of I might be missing...give me a shout. Thanks!

If you go higher up in the system you might have a shot at the silvers up there...Chums should be in there soon..
For chums= cerise jigs tipped with prawns under a float. Dick nite will work ok too...Chartreuse corky and yarn also does the trick..

Thanks, Sam...for the most part I am not expecting much. I am guessing most of the nicer fish have come and gone a long time ago, and whatever is in there is pretty well spawned out. But who knows...may be pleasantly surprised.

[edit]- After a bit of research...and the cunning use of google maps, I found Thomas' Eddy. Neither of us have any experience on this river...so I think we'll start there and walk the river one direction or the other. See what happens.

Are you guys going to fish at Bob Heirman park? Easy walk in from the parking lot and an easy drive...

Silvers are STILL out in the salt guys. They are still bonking limits out there and the saltwater steelies are starting to be caught. Look for late silvers to still shoot up the rivers in the few last weeks of November and early December (always a good push of coho's up the Snohomish system going up to the Wallace tributary on the Sky) and the Chums should be able to show up soon....

Good luck Chad and let us know how you do. I plan to try and hunt some Chums down for CnR purposes over my Thanksgiving break if time allows between trout fishing and Blackmouth fishing...

Yeah...I was looking for some information googling the Snohomish and found that park on the Snohomish Parks and Recreation website. Looks like a decent starting point anyrate. Looks like there are a few public parks and a few ponds in the general area. To my surprise, one of our company's outlying yards is just a few blocks from there on Broadway...never knew that. Learn something new everyday!

If some silvers and chum are still out in the salt like you're thinking...I may start at Bob Heirman and work my way back to the west a ways. I'll know more once I get there and see what the area is like.

I know for a fact that guys are still doing good off the beaches of Whidbey Island out in the salt for silvers....So they are still hanging around....

I spent yesterday about a mile downstream from Hwy 9. Got there at low tide (10:30ish) and left about 5:00. I saw one salmon that was already spawned out - didn't see any sign of anything else all day though. I was using blue foxs and jigs of different colors tipped with shrimp. Around 3:30 I noticed trout rising, so I switched over to trout spinners, and ended up catching/releasing 3 rainbows at about 14-15 inches on a yellow roostertail in the last 1.5 hours of the day.

Questions: Do Chums rise like the pinks? What is a cerise jig?

Yes, they rise in a similar fashion to pinks. They will porpoise when schooled and heading up river, (although may just sit in there if not moving up) and they will sometimes jump. Cerise is a color I would describe as somewhere in between pink and purple...
I got to tell you the tips on this board really work. I read the threads with comments from Sam Kafelafish and Mallard, about how to rig dick nites. I caught two silvers in the snohomish earlier this year and have been catching a few fish on the green as well. I caught a chum on a cerise jig there too.

Yep Cerise is a color. Exactly like Dogfish mentioned. Purple/pink mix. I hear a chartreuse one will do the trick too...

yea i hooked into a nice steelhead on kinda the same rig exept i used a cork-slip bobber but he broke off about 10 secounds after i hooked him. i need to know what to do cuzz my rig broke right at the swivel that connected my main line/ and the bobber to the leader and the jig. i sure was happy watching my only cork bobber drifting down the river, and my jig probably stuck in the bruisers mouth. (o yea and it was my last jig also!) i need to make a trip to Joes and buy some more jigs and bobbers. but like i said how can i downsize my chances of breaking off at my knots?

Tie better knots. Test them really good before you use the setup...Wrap the line around your hand a few times and pull and make sure the knot doesn't slip at all or break...

Could be the knot your using too...

And it could be your drag tightness. I see so many people who have their drag wrenched down and just horse fish in, often times snapping the line. The fun of fishing is the fight, set your drag properly and let the fish tire itself out....No need to rip him in, but don't let him tire himself out to the point where it is too tired and won't revive when returned to the water...

All I know is I made extra care in the last few years to test every knot I tied really hard. Didn't have on fish break me off at all this year...Not even a mid teens king on 10lb test and 8lb leader....

Just to add to what Sam has already said...lubricate your knots when you tie them. Spit on them...or put a drop of whatever smelly stuff your using before you cinch it down. A little bit of lube can keep the line from getting damaged when the knot is pulled tight...or at least that's my thoughts on knot tying...

I lubricate my knots religiously. That can't be stressed enough. I can tie a knot inside my mouth (sometimes it's necessary) or with spit on it, and still break it off. The only perfect knot is acheived underwater. I tie most of my knots on the water or in a filled up sink for maximum strength. Like Sam said, the type of knot is very important. I used to tie the snell knot for trout fishing leaders, but that would always break very easily at the point that it came out of the hook eye matter how I lubricated it. The Trilene knot is MUCH better for this. I can't break it off no matter how hard I pull.
