Get off the Pier????#-o Many points on the sound casting live or fresh herring with a float with the correct tide= you can wack them but you have to earn it Location, fish runs and tides is everything and this style of fishing is a blast we do it right off Possesion, Apple tree and many other spots and wack them good using this method!!!!:eye: :compress: :cheese:
Bonics 101 advanced class part 2 LOL
Bottom line in hunting and fishing and more if you can drive up to it without earning it in the masses it (SUCKS)#-o :eye: The truth sets you free, steelhead Hike the upper remote stretches of systems, same goes with salmon, upland birds, big game .
You Earn it to finish and all of nature Hates Man and crowds and cities you ever heard of Alaska 2 highways in and out:cheers:
Thats why its not as impacted by man= millions of land mass and systems =less goofs and cupcakes then are city alone for the whole State!
You must Earn it to be a fish hog!:compress:

Have fun with that process/its very productive#-o :-({|=
If you do it and are stuck on this use a steelhead bobber large size= bait I spoke of above and clear Floracarbon leader about 15lbs push a incoming, high, or slack and call me when your 50 or so :eye:
When your arms fell off from casting your herring off the Land base you call the pier:cyclops:

Do you reaaaalllllly want to hook into a big one THAT close to the pier..... Duuuuude. Its happened to me on who cares what jig the thing is the fish seem to head directly to the pillings and then wrap your line around them and snap all the fun is done.

You can just drop a dart down and jig it straight up and down... granted you will be at it for what will seem like ever but the arm won't be as worn out as it is casting and jigging. Again the problem is the Kings dive (most of the time) find the pilings and unless your carefull you will lose the fish.

...but most of the legal blackmouth have been hitting about 15 to 20 yards out. The guy that caught the nice one Monday was out about 100 feet or so when he got hit.... you reallllly don't want a big 10 pound hitting right under the pier unless it heads right back out when it hits. Been there did that more than once and lost one of em.

Get both a 1.5 ounce and a 2 ounce for when the currents start moving hard otherwise you will be fluttering and crossing everybody and not really sinking at all.

Fishboy you might have a shot catching one right under the pier... happened to me this morning... nice pull but I couldn't get the hook all the way set... oh well. I was freezing my well hands and everything else by then anyways.
