gears to catch bait fish

i was wondering is it illegal to use cast net or dip net in the puget sound to catch bait fish such as herring?

Yes, it is illegal.

Only dip net with handle, or jigging gear is legal. Per page 102

Cast nets have been a no-no for a bunch of years in WA. You can dip, jig, or rake to fill your needs. I always have a Sabiki (sp) rig in the boat to jig herring when available. Sometimes the salmon (and always the bottom feeders) prefer to eat bait. And if you're gonna use bait; use the freshest stuff that you can get your hands on.

thank alot for the info. so what area in the Puget sound would you catch these bait fish.

For herring I wait for a school and jig lil Gomakatsu hooks on a line.It'll catch enough for bait for the day.Depends on a persons need or greed.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators,its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.
