New Fly Tube

Post by AdsBot [Google] » Sat Mar 08, 2008 8:18 pm

Well I am new to the sport of fly fishing and stand 6'4" 185. I'm looking at purchasing my first fly tube but have no idea where to start. I was told that Joe's sells a quality tube in the $150.00 price range. I'm looking to spend no more than $250 on everything. My foot size is 14 mens, I'm not sure how that figures into this. Do I need to get a tube, waders, and fins, purchased separately, or is there a bundle somewhere? My foot size is larger than normal, so the fins would have to be larger. I'm looking at spending no more than $250 on a new fly tube. Any suggestions/help is very much appreciated! Thanks, kutthroatkilla

Float tubes suck. You will not be happy and freeze your cajones off. Why not spend just a little more and get a pontoon? I have one that I just might be willing to sell for about what you want to spend. They are WAY more versatile and FUN.

I recommend that you get an open front type of float tube. The circular ones are dangerous. I have an Outcast Super Fat Cat. It is out of the price range you are looking for, but they make an almost identical tube that I believe is in your price range, and there are similar styles made by other companies. I like my float tube quite a bit better than my pontoon boat. I have a very nice pontoon boat that I rarely use because the Super Fat Cat is so easy to fish out of and is much better for transportation, set-up, etc. I have usually caught 2 or 3 fish by the time my pontoon boat buddy even gets on the water. It sits much higher than a regular float tube and I can drop an anchor off the back for chironomid fishing. Why don't you go to an internet site for a company like Cabela's or Kauffmanns and see what your options are. Whatever you choose, I hope you have wonderful time in it.

pontoons are awesom if theres no wind, kind of hard to keep them in one place. float tubes are a little easier to control, but it does suck sitting in the water.

Nothing beats a Fat Cat for sure. But they will put you back a little in the pocket book. For your budget check out the Bass Pro Shops float tubes. I have been looking at this one. It fits your bill. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/store ... rchResults
Here is another good place to look and read reviews.

Check out the Navigator II.

Ok, thanks a bunch fishnislife. I like the Togiak Pontoon Float Tube a lot and have heard rave reviews and it's only $139.99 at Joe's. I have Marc helping me out so I think I'm in good hands. Once I bought this float tube, what would I need to buy to cover my legs and keep them warm? This is where I get confused - do I need to then buy some kind of waders and then fins on top of that? This is where it gets confusing for me and I know Marc will help me out. I can't wait to fish with Marc in Spokane. It'll be fun to unite with some of you guys east of the Cascades in places like Cheney and Spokane.

Yes, you will want to pick up waders, fins and boots.
You can find quality waders with boot like soles and not have to buy seperate boots but you will want to get either or. You can get away with any fins that strap around the boots, but the better quality ones will give you less work around the lake. Your legs and hips will thanks you. Orvis has good fins but will they run up your budget.
The bonus to your purchase of good waders though is that you can use them for more than just float tubn.

Thanks again fishnislife. I'll do my research and between what I find and Marc finds for me I think I can make an informed decision. I'm tired of hauling around my electric trolling motor, 10' raft, pump etc. I'd like a beginners float tube, but quality, like the one you mentioned, the Togiak, and then the waders with the adjustible flippers. Do you have any good links to the waders I should purchase - looking to spend no more than $70 here, and fins (no more than $50 here).???? Thanks fishnislife, you are proving to be very valuable in my search of becoming a fly angler. I do appreciate it very much. Regards, kutthroat

Here is a good article on float tubing for bass
http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/float_tube.html

Very good waders.

Of course you will have spend a little more for the extra material, being so tall.

Fins will be tricky with a size 14 shoes. You may need to go with a strap on fin without a toe. Like these.

This is what makes it a little trickier...I'm 6'5" with shoes and 185-188. That makes it tough, cause I'm a slender guy with a tall, athlethic frame. Oh well.

Looks like I'd have to get the tall with the shoe size being 11-14. Would you suggest I order this from Cabelas or go down and visit the store and try all this stuff on? I think I should go to the store and make sure it all fits.

What a great article about exactly what I'm trying to get into...a float tube, waders, and fins...just what I had imagined! What a fun read, and very informative for all under $300.00! Wow, thanks so much.

Fishingmachine: Please take all personal matters to a PM format, not my discussion thread or forum for other members. These kind of questions are inappropriate to post on a forum like this. Please just send me a PM and we can discuss it there. I'm tired of constantly using a forum as the context for personal fishing matters.

I fished the Togiak tube for a couple of years. I'm not crazy about the valves, but they are manageable. I tip the scales at almost 300 pounds and that tube floated me well. I really like the idea of two bladders. That way if you lose air in one, you still have air in the other. I used Cabela's breathable Dry Plus waders (bought 4-5 years ago and still going strong) for $79 I think. Cheap $29 fins finished the list. The whole package ironically came to $247 + tax and/or shipping. Cabela's breathable Dry Plus waders are now over $100. Oh, I forgot. Really cheap felt sole wading shoes from Wally World for $39. So, even if you go budget, it's still going to cost a bit more than what you have your budget set at. You may be able to go used for somewhat less. I sold the tube about a year ago, but if I still had my legs about me, I'd still have the tube.
Good Luck and wear a flotation vest,
Where you go is less important than how you get there.
