Trout
I was out at beaver lake fishing for trout and saw tons surfacing for bugs and was wondering what bug they were eating and maybe if you could show me the fly to match it

RE:Trout
Search for Chronny's, midge or chironomid.......... I often recommend a "Snow Cone". I usually start with black body, various color wire ribbing. Other body colors to consider are red, green and brown. I find the "stretch flex" tied bodies much more durable, although they can be hard to find (unless you tie like I do?). Use a floating line and leader to match the water depth. Put a strike indicator at the end of the floating line, let it sink to the bottom, sloww twitchy retrieve, when the indicator goes down,,,,,,,,,,,,,game on. Trout typically eat the majority of cronnys subsurface. Have fun, try different water depths. Incidently, its my fav way to fish trout...."Go Figure" TTFN

Chironomid guy is correct. The midge is about the only fly that is hatching this early in the year. Later come the may flies, caddis, damsels and stones. March and April are great Chironomid months.fishingmachine wrote:I was out at beaver lake fishing for trout and saw tons surfacing for bugs and was wondering what bug they were eating and maybe if you could show me the fly to match it

fishingmachine,
Give this link a try. I met Brian recently at a sport show. He's a really friendly guy, and willing to share lots of information. He's also one of the world's foremost chironomid fishermen.

This link may show you what some of the fly patterns look like.
