I was out at beaver lake fishing for trout and saw tons surfacing for bugs and was wondering what bug they were eating and maybe if you could show me the fly to match it

I would say they are mostly chrinomids and small midges.

Is there anyway someone could show me what the fly looks like that resembles the midge or Chromonaid

I believe fly's are often named after the bug they mimic...

Search for Chronny's, midge or chironomid.......... I often recommend a "Snow Cone". I usually start with black body, various color wire ribbing. Other body colors to consider are red, green and brown. I find the "stretch flex" tied bodies much more durable, although they can be hard to find (unless you tie like I do?). Use a floating line and leader to match the water depth. Put a strike indicator at the end of the floating line, let it sink to the bottom, sloww twitchy retrieve, when the indicator goes down,,,,,,,,,,,,,game on. Trout typically eat the majority of cronnys subsurface. Have fun, try different water depths. Incidently, its my fav way to fish trout...."Go Figure" TTFN

Chironomid guy is correct. The midge is about the only fly that is hatching this early in the year. Later come the may flies, caddis, damsels and stones. March and April are great Chironomid months.

OK. If I have to give up my mentors and sources........... Brian Chan is a close friend and have know him for years. He is an inspiration to visit with, fish with and debate entomology. Great guy, lots of info. PM me and I can supply additional info on Chironnys if ya like.
