Went out and fished from 7/3 to 7/13. 7/3 was my dad and I. As soon as we got out there we heard it was really slow fishing. like the worst the people have seen it in years and that was not what we had wanted to hear. 7/3-this was our very first season for Chinook. Because of that and slow fishing we didnt have high hopes. We launched around 4:30 and were fishing at Pillar by 4:45. I was running a red racer flasher with a green glow spatter back (OG142R) hootchie at 65 feet on the rigger and my dad was running a green and glow flasher with a pure double glow hootchie at 94 feet on the rigger. we went hours with only dogfish and rockfish. and finally my dad's rod pops out of the release. it didnt come off but it didnt pull hard so we thought it was a shaker. when we got it to the boat we were wrong it was a 15 pounder so i netted and it amazingly was a hatch. after we got back down it was like the rest of the day... no bites. that was the only fish for today. 7/4 to 7/8 it was my dad my mom and I. these five days were slightly better but not alot. all these days were from 2 to 5 fish caught and 0 to 3 fish kept. at this point over all the days we caught probably 20 fish and not a single salmon came on my rod. so i switched to the exact same rig and depth. 7/9 to 7/12- we had up some cousins for a few days and they didnt know ANYTHING about ANY of it and we had 5 people in our little 16 ft boat which i didnt like at all. but surprisingly we did better. the first of these three days was a 4 fish kept day then a 0 fish kept day but some caught and then the last was another 4 fish kept day. fishing was finally slowly getting better. and since i put on the same thing as my dads i finally caught fish.7/13- BY FAR the best day.today we had 5 people in our boat again. we had 2 rigger poles and 1 with a diver. not long and the diver rod with a cut plug caught a hatchery coho which was the first caught on the trip. then the riggers caught 4 keepers and then 2 a little later which already was our best day but got even better. we trolled from pillar point to the green buoy at sekiu. with all bites coming from pillar to the coal mines we motored to pillar at the tide change and caught fish.we had 3 doubles and a couple more by themselves in about 20 mins. we couldnt keep the fish off. we got the rest of our 10 fish here. 9 out of the 10 were but barely legal and 1 was an 11.3 pounder. all except the coho caught on a green flasher with a pure double glow hootchie with no bait. we caught more without bait than with. about half the fish caught from 90 to 100 feet and the other half at 125 to 150 feet. we varied our speed from 2 to 3.5 mph through water not over ground and all speeds caught fish. going back out the 16th for more action.

Nice report. At least you guys got some fish. My buddy was there over the weekend and he said it's very slow right now. They only got 3 keepers. I'm going next week and hope it will be better. Was you trolling in 90-100ft and 125-150ft of water or was that how deep you were on the downriggers?

FYI Fishchecker report at CQ running about 30% success rate on Nooks but also a surprising number of Silvers for this early.

those depths were on the riggers. we fished in 150 to 250 feet of water most of the time.

I'll have to ask my buddy how he's doing it, because he released 19 kings last saturday and got his limit. He said it's on fire. He's also been fishing CQ for years so I'm sure he knows a trick or two.

But you got fish! Nice work!

yeah. we got our ten on sunday which was our last day so i think it is starting to heat up. we caught 13 and released 3 that last day. like i said in the report... we are heading back tomorrow for 3 or 4 or 5 more days so then we will know for sure if its getting good.

Only released three wild fish? That's good for CQ. Last couple years we've had to release about half of the Nooks we catch. I always think a lot of the high fins are Canuck fish since they don't mark Chinooks. I'll be there on Sunday.
