I launched out of Porcupine at 0615 with my buddy Jay. It was foggy as heck and it took us a while to slowly cruise down to McCoy's. We had done OK last week there so we started off jigging the upriver edge of the flat. We picked up 6 dinks (12-13 inches) fairly quickly and then decided to continue downriver to see if we could find some keepers. We stopped off at both islands, when the waters up, and picked up another 6 dink walleyes between the 2 spots, so downriver we went once again. At casino flats I tried blading up on the flat while Jay jigged the edge of the flat. We tried from 20 FOW to 50 FOW with nary a bite. We noticed a couple of other boats trolling so we gave it a try as well. We caught another half dozen dinks trolling in 22 FOW all the way to 55 FOW, The wind had been blowing pretty strong all morning so we headed back upriver to McCoy's where we caught 2 dinks. The wind began to ease a little so I decided to make the run upriver to buoy 5. There were half a dozen boats already there, it was about 1300 at this point, with most of them drifting in the swift current while jigging. I set us up on the current seam and we very quickly starting catching some eyes; most were dinks but we did manage to catch 7 eaters from 15 1/2 inches to 16 1/2 inches. At one point I got into a school of 4-5 inch eyes and proceeded to catch at least 20 of the little buggers on a blade bait. They were pretty much the only thing hitting a blade bait, everything else was caught on a 1/2 oz. jig with a 3-4 inch swimbait. I switched to a swimbait after I caught 1 eye with a 3 inch sculpin in its throat. We did tip our jigs with half a night crawler but it didn't really seem to matter too much as the piece I usually had on was less than 1/2 an inch long. The catch total for the day was at least 50 eyes plus 2 little smallies. The water temp was 42 degrees and we caught fish everywhere we stopped, just nothing of real size. We did see a couple of guys in a small Lowe catch a 5-6 lb. eye, take a picture and then release her. That was the only large fish we saw anyone catch. It will probably be a couple of weeks before the bigger fish start showing, by then the only place to launch will be 7 bays as they are dropping Roosevelt a foot a day. The water clarity was about 5 feet. last weekend it was less than 2 feet.

We met a guy out on the water and then back at the launch who gave us a bottle of marinade/barbecue sauce that he makes. It's called Desert Jack and is quite excellent. I cooked up my half of the eyes we kept after marinading the fillets in Desert Jack and I can tell you it giave an excellent flavor to the walleyes I cooked on the grill.
