Road trip from Wenatchee to Port Angeles in search of Dungeness crab with salmon on the undercard. Six hour trip wasn't too bad going over, but the freshly paved section of highway 2 east of Leavenworth, coming home after dark, was treacherous as there was no visible center line OR fog line plus thick smoke and heavy traffic in both directions.
Our trip agenda was to drop the crab pots and kill 2 hours at a time trying for salmon.
In the beginning, I thought something was wrong with the Humminbird, as it was showing depths of 2 or 3 feet far from shore. We quickly figured out it was a solid layer of jellyfish, which made trolling a challenge. Not getting accurate depth or marking fish, made for a real crapshoot. We tried jigging, but that too was blind man's bluff. Finally, I landed the boat and drove from the spit back to town for some green package frozen herring. At that point we only had a couple hours left to fish, but drift mooching a cut plug with a 2oz slip sinker got me hooked up with a hard fighting native king in the 15 lb range. The fish was released in good shape. It seems that fishing had dropped off for a while, but is coming on strong now.
I'm rating this a 4 because that fish reminded me of my youth and brought back memories of entire summers spent in a rented cabin at Hansville in the 50's. Net bounty..... 5 pounds of wonderful Dungeness meat.

Nice! I just "replanned" my family camping trip for tues -thurs nearby in sequim bay. Salmon and crab targets also. I hope the jellyfish problem clears up, but otherwise, that's just report i was hoping to hear!

Glad it helped....remember crabbing is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, we found that we had to be in fairly deep water 90' or more for Dungees, otherwise it was rock crab...good luck!

PA harbor is infested with Dungies. Were you fishing outside of the harbor?

Thanks for the info. We'll get as close to 90 as we can with our 100 foot ropes!

BuddahB,
Best crabbing was right out front of the boat launch at the end of the spit (inside the harbor). You cannot fish salmon inside though.
